I have a 1939 ford pu with a 351w and a ford aod transmission. All part are new I am trying to get the truck on the road. The truck goes into drive and reverse, but when I drive the truck it does not seem to shift and does not go into overdrive. I have been told this is related to the trottle valve adjustment, but I am not familiar with the AOD. Any suggestions?
AOD will fail swift and sure without proper linkage. TV cable, methinks. You may find info or an email for questions here. Get it fixed before you drive it as the forum has many postings about this problem and the failure that follows when things aren't hooked up right.
85e150six4mtod Thanks for the information, I have not resolved the problem yet, but I am getting closer. Thanks again JNJO39
I was wondering if you ever found the problem and got it fixed. I just did an engine swap and now I am having the same problem, shifts into D/OD/1 and R just fine, but won't shift out of first. Thanks!

I resolved my problem by making an adjustment to the governing valve in the tale shaft, and adjusting the trottle vale on the side of the transmission. The TV valve is a pressure adjustment, but some people can adjust this valve after testing driving and readjusting.
The problem seem to improve the more I drove the car, but seemed to get worse if the the truck set for awhile. .Tthe truck is in the upholstry shop the past two weeks, so I am not sure that i have corrected the problem permantely
how did you make the adjustment to the governing valve? i've been doing the drive-and-test thing twith the TV cable, but still to no avail, it hasnt helped. thanks for the help

I didn't do it myself, but I know for sure the tail shaft was removed and the governing valve was cleaned. The valve was removed and cleaned until the valve worked smoothly and reassembled. This is the only adjustment there is for the valve. As I understand it the valve moves up in low gear based on the pressure in the transmission. When the valve is at the top the tranxsmission shifts. When you stop the valve returns to the valve seat. If it failes to reseat the transmission will not shift. The valve is then cleaned to make sure it moves easily.
I hope this helps. If you find out anything different I would like to know
