I needed a plow truck for my driveway this year(bought a new home)
so I decided to go with a 73-79 F-250 for years
Well my first truck i come across is a 78 F-250 4x4 Crew cab with a rebuilt 351m and a c-6
I buy it and tell the wife i can get a plow for it ..truck is driveable
but need body work.
Well i look for a plow setup and what do i find but
a 79 F-250 4x4 Supercab with a western plow setup, a 460 and a 4speed
truck is rough but driveable so i buy it
Now my dilema
I need to sell one, and keep one for a plow truck..
What do i do??
I would keep the one with the 460. As long as your feet don't drag on the ground, who cares what a plow truck looks like. If you don't mind the clutch, and the 460 isn't too tired, it will push better than a 351M. In my opinion, a 351M isn't good for much except making you poor. They aren't known for their gobs of power.
You have to sell one but don't know which one. That's easy!!
Take the 460 / 4 spd out of the supercab and drop it into the crew cab. It couldn't be easier since you have ALL of the neccesary parts right there!!!
Then put the 351M / C6 into the supercab.
If you prefer the 460 w/ the C6, it will bolt up because the 351M & the 460 have the same bell housing bolt pattern (same goes for the 351M/4spd combo). Although, I would have the C6 rebuilt for insurance incase it's on it's way out.
The F250 supercab probably came with a 351M/400 anyway, so loss there.
I don't like autos , but for plowing, it may be a better tranny. Just use a tranny cooler and a deep pan.
If you have a little time, it's pretty much just a matter of swapping everything from one truck to another.
This way, you keep:
460 (much better for power)
manual or auto (it's up to you)
Crew Cab (they are becoming quite rare)
Sell the F250 supercab w/ a 351M and the tranny you don't want. Simple as that. The plow will bolt up to the CC frame. You said the bodies are rough, so really, no call there. I would also see what else you might be able to take from the truck your not keeping to fix/upgrade the one you do.
I'd want the shortest truck to plow with unless your plowing in a straight line.
You're right about that. A bronco would be best, other than the 1/2 ton frame.
If he just has a long driveway to plow I think the CC would be ok. Whether it be the supercab or CC, either way, they both have the turning radius of an aircraft carrier.
i dont know, i've seen quite a few crew cabs with 44 fronts. 69crew is gonna have to check it out. i'd set a truck up crew cab, 4spd, 460, and dana 60 out front. that would be my keeper right there

That's the the way I'd go about it. I'd also choose the best bed of the two. I'd take the best of both trucks and put them into the crewcab, the put the other truck back together with what's left, sell it, and convince the wife that the truck I kept needs repairs.
I believe that you will need the flexplate for a 460. I think they have a different imbalance. The starter will work though. Check in the 385 series forum as well as the 335 series forum. All the info you need will be there.
