I have a 1950 F-5. I must get my speed up to 55-60mph (from 30-35!)
Larger tires won't do it. Has anyone ever swapped the original single-speed (6.66) rear end for a late-model one-ton dually rear. If I put the dually rear end under it, it will be a little too wide. I can't find anyone who can cut down (narrow) a dually. But almost everyone I called can narrow a single-rear wheel axle. I GUESS THIS IS MY QUESTION: Do you know of any problem with swapping a 3/4 ton rear, then adding adaptors to allow dual wheels on it? (mostly for the "look").
Brad,
I can't see any difference between narrowing a dually rear differential as opposed to a single axle diff. cutting the housing down shouldn't be a problem, maybe getting the axles is the hard part. You might start checking with shops that specialize in drag racing, maybe do a google search on "narrowing a rear end" and see what comes up.
I may be wrong on this, but I believe that if you are looking at the 80's or later rearends there are two types. The first are normal 1 ton rear with long lugnuts for dual wheels, and the other are Narrowed for Cab and Chassis models. If you could find a Cab and Chassis model it might be just what you need.
What I'm planning on doing with my F-3, is getting a hold of a 68-72 Dana 60 axle from an F-250 or 350. From my understanding is that these are the right width for our trucks and also a virtual bolt on part.
When I start to hunting for my axle, I may even look at a Dana 70 (if they have one) which would be a 1 ton, dually rear end. You may want to try scrounging up one of these.
What year duallies are you looking at? The rear axles from a pre-72 1/2 ton is just an inch wider than the axle in a Bonus Built 1/2 ton and pretty much a bolt in job. Following that logic, maybe a pre-72 one ton axle would be very close to a Bonus Built F-5. I don't know this as fact, just assuming. Trying to give you somewhere to look.
You guys are awesome. Broomfield, I'll look into the cab & chassis idea. I hope you're right!! I'll start a search for that 68-72 Dana 60 also. Thanks guys.
A Chevy 14 bolt Cab and Chassis rear axle bolts right into a 53 F350. Mine came out of a 79 C30 Dually The spring perches are in the correct location and the axle appears to be the same width. The 14 Bolt is a lot heftier than a Dana 60, so it may be a better choice for an F5
I just did swapped in a dana 60 out of 69 f250 into my 53 f250 and it was a bolt in opperation. Everything fit perfect. Of course the $75 axle ended up closer to $200 time I went through the brakes, would you believe there are 3 different size brake shoes used on that axle. Of course the ones I have cost more than twice as much as the other two. It's only money, if we want an inexpensive past time we should try something else.
