Hello everyone,
I purchased a 2005 f150 supercrew XLT, 4.6 for my wife this weekend. I own a 2000 F150 with the 5.4 that has 185,000 miles on it and quite frankly it would run circles around this one. Here's my delima I am not at all impressed with the power of the 4.6. With the cruise control set at 60 it will downshift going up hills with just me in the truck and not towing anything. Will power improve after some break in miles. I love the truck but it needs more get up and go. Since I just bought i yesterday is there any chance the dealership would let me exchange it for one with the 5.4 since I am unhappy with it?? Thanks for your input!!
Yes, but you really can't tell a lot on a 10 minute test drive and my wife drove it most of the time. I should of done more research before I bought it. But I didn't.
Yes she is. But here's the other thing. I also plan to tow a horse trailer with this truck and I really don't think the 4.6 will get the job done. Will this engine get any stronger with some break in miles?? Will a chip, exhaust and intake make much of a difference??
You have to understand that this was somewhat of a impulse buy. My wife fell in love with the truck as soon as she saw it. If I would have took the time to think about it I would have never bought one with the 4.6. But now that I have I need to know what my options are.
You are going to find that each dealer deals with that differently. Yes, your motor will get stronger as it gets broken in...but I wouldnt want the 4.6 . Hope the dealer helps you out.
You could try to exchange it, but the dealership will probably try to make you like the one you bought. I would suggest test driving one with a 5.4 before making to much of a fuss. The 5.4's are not a ball of fire either. Good Luck and let us know how it went. Thanks
Hello MD30,
In 99 I bought a used 97 w/4.6L and asked the Ford salesman if it would tow my horsetrailer and he said "no problem". I signed the papers, wrote a check for the down and drove it home on Fri. Sat I hooked up my empty 2horse trailer and took a drive up a moderate but long grade and found that at wot in 2nd (auto trans) it would barely maintain 45mph. I drove it to the dealer and took him for a drive and he agreed that the 4.6 was totally inadequate and said pick out a 5.4 and wrote a new deal. The point here is did you mention towing? If so, borrow a heavy 2horse trailer with horses in it and take the dealer for a ride reminding him that his dealership will be doing the warranty work on the blown engine and tranny. I'm sure he will let you upgrade without a penalty, just agree to pay the difference in sticker price. Good Luck

Be advised, however, you may get the "You're not suppose to tow for the first 1000 miles" line. A smart dealer can use that to;
1. Tell you keep the truck and see how she works once she's broken in.
2. Tell you to keep the truck since you just possibly voided the warranty on the powertrain by towing before the manual says that is is okay to do so.
Just how many horses are you towing and how much is the total weight or them and the trailer?
Small engine and small gears do not a tow vehicle make...
Let's hope the dealer will work with you on this one.
We all make mistakes like this from time to time. Unless the dealer is willing to bend over backwards for you, you may just have to face the fact that you'll have to write a substantial check to get the 5.4L SuperCrew that fits your towing needs. Don't beat yourself up too much about it; chalk it up to experience. You'll feel better about it a few months down the road when your enjoying the extra towing power of the 3V 5.4L.
Right now it has 130 miles on it. I'm going to talk to my salesman and the sales manager and see what I get done. I'll keep you guys posted!! Thanks for everyones input.
MD30, If you can swap out your 4.6 I would want nothing less than 5.4, Towing Package and a Limited Slip Rear Axle w/3:73 gears. If you are not towing anything real heavy or very far 3:55 gears would probably be okay. I would prefer 3:73 ratio myself. Good Luck!
