Ok, we talked to our dealer today and they are working with us to trade it out. They have two trucks in GA that have the 5.4 towing package and the 3.73 gears. They are going to rework the numbers and call us in the morning. They are also trying to work with us on the price since when I asked them before I bought if they could find me one with the 5.4 they said they tried but were unable to find one. There's a $3000.00 difference in the truck we bought and the one in GA. Now that have talked about taking the truck back and walking away from the deal. 2 have miracously showed up!! I'll keep you guys posted. I would give more of the fine details but I broke my finger this weeked and it's hard to type with two fingers taped together. Thanks for everyone's input and advice!!
3:55 or 3:73, not too much of a difference there. i have a '99 F-150 XLT 4.6l with tow package and have towed a loaded 20' open car trailer across the state without any issues. it is a little slugish getting up to speed. it came with 3:55, i installed 3:73 and it didn't make a big difference, a few hundred in rpm, still wouldn't smoke the tires from a dead stop. this truck has 168,000 and still pulling - for sale though!
however, our new truck does have the 5.4l, but still the 3:55. i would have got the 3:73, but got way too good a deal on the '05. i haven't hooked the trailer to this one yet, 400 miles to go! i would have thought the new 4.6l had more horsepower than my '99.
Ok....We picked the new truck up last night and we are much happier with this one. This one has a lot more options but the dealer ate $2000 of it for the big screw up on there part. I have to say they were great about this whole deal and worked with us to make sure that we were happy and satisfied with our purchase. We kept the first truck from Saturday until last night and had put almost 400 miles on it. Realisticly what kind of gas mileage can I expect out of this truck?? My 2000 averages around 16.5 mpg. That's with a mix of city and highway driving and with flowmasters and a K&N filter and I do have somewhat of a heavy foot. My wife will be primarily driving this one mostly in town.

MD30, Congrats on making everything work out. I am sure you will be happier with the extra ponies and torque this one has. Were you able to get the limited slip rear axle and what color did you go with? Good Luck!
You could try to exchange it, but the dealership will probably try to make you like the one you bought. I would suggest test driving one with a 5.4 before making to much of a fuss. The 5.4's are not a ball of fire either. Good Luck and let us know how it went. Thanks
Your right it's no ball of fire,BUT, it will blow the 4.6 out of the water. I test drove the 4.6 and knew in 5 minutes that it was extreamly underpowered. It was working like crazy jus tputting around town. Went with the 5.4 and love it. Fuel economy is about the same which tells you that the 4.6 is too little engine for this truck.
Congrats on getting the new truck! It is good to hear that your dealer was willing to help you out to make sure that you were a satisfied customer. I owned a 1999 4.6L supercab and comparing it to my 2005 5.4L supercrew, it is not even close. Once again, congrats. How about some picts. of the new ride?

I'm really confused how this was their screw up?
They could have really stuck you to the wall but instead went the extra mile after the deal to go a good distance and find the truck you really wanted. Sounds like a decent dealer. Glad you got what you really wanted. Oh, BTW, those trucks they found very likely weren't available originally. Inventories change daily, one day its there, the next it is not, especially if it is the old model year.
