Hi Everyone
I have a 06 F350 PU with about 600 miles on it. I am wondering if any of you have put a remote start on your V10 and how well it works? Please tell me the brand also. I am wondering what this does to the warranty? Should I be concerned?
Thanks
Good question, Captchas has one and I have one waiting to get put on. I going with the Ford Gold and getting a Ford dealer to do it just for warranty concerns. The Viper has a lot more bells and whistles for less money but I am leery of letting the kids that work in these places touch my Babe. She has never been back to the dealer in the 9 months since I got her but I have that fuel clip recall to get done and will get the security - remote gold system done when the dealer gets that clip.
A properly installed remote starter won't affect your warranty unless it can be proven that the installation caused the concern that you are getting fixed. For instance if you get a system installed by a stereo installation shop and they butcher the wiring under the dash and it causes a fire then it wouldn't be covered.
Last week I put an Astrostart on my truck and it works great. I've installed quite a few Astrostarts.
I was thinking about using a Ford kit but there is no warranty unless it's dealer installed. I work at a dealer but unless there is a repair order for the job Ford wont warranty it. The Ford kit also cost more.
Unless you know for a fact the dealers install person is a first rate electrician don't get the gold system from the dealer.
Find a pro installer and go with one of the more high tech more features systems for less money.
Search the superduty forum for the chief warrant officer up there in wash or oregon. I can't remember his whole screen name. He wrote up about a mod for the stereo in the center consol and a lot about his remote start install and brand about a year ago.
Ford Gold System here. There is an incredible amount of features to choose from, depending on the programming, since this system works on all Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury products. The system itself was developed by CodeAlarm so the hardware/software is top notch. That also goes for CodeAlarm's customer service. I had a question regarding the "tach sense" hookup on the V10 and the guy from CodeAlarm knew exactly where to go and what to do.
My truck came with a third party system that was added and the whole thing was a hack job. Cheap hardware and a hacked up install. The power door lock solenoids barely had enough voltage to operate because of the wiring job and cheap componets. With the Ford Gold system the solenoids "slam" like they should.
Install with the Ford Gold system is straight forward with the help of the online installation manual. There are SuperDuty specific install pages that specifically tell you which wire in which harness. There is also a detailed programming section.
Price for my Gold system was $132.....off E-Bay Oh, and it's awesome
Well DMP437, I am glad you like the Ford Gold as I am kind of committed to it as I ordered it a while back. The high tech units that alarm your Key Fob if your truck is violated would only get me trouble with the law or killed because if I caught some low life breaking into my truck, it would be him or me and either way ..........you lose because the system now protects creeps more than a regular guy protecting his property.
I got nothing against the CodeAlarm Ford Gold or Silver systems... But beware the 05-06 truck is an entirely different animal and my experience with Code Alarm was not inspiring... I am interested also in this statement: "incredible amount of features to choose from"....so I ask such as????
Back to the 05 SuperDuty.... the tach sense wire requires an additional module to convert the digital signal back to an analog pulse for the remoter start system to work. I am a certified aircraft electrician and will NOT let another soul ever touch and hack my electrical system on a perfect truck. Every attempt by me to get the EXACT install procedures for my 2005 from CodeAlarm or Ford was a disappointment. Hell three of their people wanted to argue with me that there was any difference between a 99-04 V10 and a 05-06 V10 electrical systems, and not one of them had any clue what CAN (Common Access Network) was.
I have inspected, fixed, and advised at least ten different Ford Co-workers on the remote start. Each install I have seen was a butt splice, crimp connector wires all over the place very unprofessional hack job. Two of the local dealers farm the work out and each one told me the instructions are impossible to preform with out calling the help line several times.
And don't even get me started in on warranty issues with TPS and PCM issues from a hack job install. I know one person from last winter who's truck spent 23 days down time over an intermittent engine shut down problem. They finally tracked it to the remote start hacked install. Gee it seems if you use a #20 small gage 3m Fold over crimp adapter on a #12 larger gage wire then it cuts enough strands that the right amount of juice can not get through...DUHHH!
Yep I think the Ford Gold system is what I would like to have, but I am no fan of the CodeAlarm information, or their customer service, and my experience is that the Ford dealers are similarly unimpressed and usually incompetent to install it correctly.
Fred , your post is making me have second thoughts about having Ford do a Gold system on my 05. Maybe I'll just stick with a steering wheel lock and leave my cheap bump alarm on it. It would break my heat if they ever screwed up this truck.
Don...searching for an installer for your baby requires the same tenacity your would apply searching for a heart surgeon. Look at their work, expect to pay top dollar for top quality work. Get the Gold system just for the remote start and defend your truck with insurance and a gun. For what it is worth I have a great insurance company. The Gold system does not have enough features to get me any serious anti theft discount.
I found a shop with a guy around 40 that has done installs for 18 years. I pride myself on being able to read people and this guy instills confidence in me. He says no crimp connections , everything soddered and he recommends the Viper 791XV that has anti grind circuit to prevent you grinding the starter if you turn the key too far and this sytem starts the engine from 2000 feet away. Lots of options and the little remote shows you if the vehicle is bumped or if a door is opened . He says he takes 5 hours to do it and he has given me a quote of 810 bucks installed. He claims Viper is the best remote starter security sytem on the market and it is made in the US. Any thoughts?
I am fairly sure that is the same information the Chief Warrant officer claimes and about the same price also. I choose not to go that method and sit on my hands ignoring the whole mess because all I want is a simple remote start option and have no need for the security side. Prettu sure this fall I will get the Ford gold system and muddle through the install myself If I can con some one out of the exact programing instructions.
Back when I was looking into all the systems the Viper 700 X series seemed to be top line and well respected. There web site does insist that a "dealer" do the install for the warranty to be inforce.
Google Viper then check out Ebay ads then see if this guy can cut the price any. I hear there is a LOT of wiggle room on this market segment.
Fred, thanks for the quick response. The labor is the biggest part of this job. as I have seen the whole system for well under 300 bucks. 500 is a lot to pay for labor but if he does a good job at least I am getting something.
We have an appointment to get him to fix the power door lock on my son's 94 Corolla.
We had this sytem put in by a big Audio store and the car did not have power door locks so we got them to do the two front doors. The actuator on the passenger side has been screwy since they did it . It is under warranty but I don't want those unfriendly rude punks working on any of our vehicles any more.
You would think a big Chain store would be able to hire polite people. These guys would burn rubber on the vehicles they moved into the service bays.
We decided to pay someone else to fix it rather than let them abuse my son's car. This same place will install the same Viper system on my truck for 200 less but I don't trust their work or their honesty.
Take care, Don.

Thanks brother, was there last year, and I see the still do not have the 05 /06 V10 as requireing the tach inverter module. I have had a hard time getting anyone on thier end to comfirm or deny that the part number for the 6.0L psd is the same one needed for the V10... they just give me a bunch of shrugged shoulder BS.
