Red_Beards_98,
I just purchased a 1968 f-100 and want to remove the fuel tank and install a new one between the frame rails. But my luck it will be a pain and would have been better off leaving the tank behind the seat.I'll keep ya posted on my progress.
I belive someone on here posted that they were able to get a 90's ranger tank in between the rail and d/shaft. I just happened to be looking for that earlier today. I'll try to fin it during lunch tomorrow. Or maybe he'll see this and give us some insight.
I discarded my incab tank for a rear 32gal tank that sits where the spare tire used to be mounted from aero tanks. There is a pic of it in my gallery. They'll have one that will work for you if you don't mind the price.
i am using the ranger tank. its off a 96 i think. i had to flip the crossmember in front of the rear end and notch the left side of the cross member directly behind the cab on the bottom of the support bracket. it fits tight and has a spot on the tank that lays in the frame rail. it only leaves about an inch of clearance for the drive shaft though. im using a jag rear so my rear doesnt move and is not a consideration for my application. i dont have any pics yet but if you really want to see it i could mount it back up and get a few for you but itll be a week before i get to it . ive got 60 bucks in the tank setup.
I have a 68 f100 with dual tanks and a class three hitch. I just happen to be overhauling the whole truck over this winter. I’m pulling the cab tank and adding a second mid frame tank because with the hitch I can’t hang the spare let alone add a rear mounted tank. The fill tube will remain in he cab but will be re-plumbed to go down through the floor and cross under the cab. A 3” body lift will allow for the 2 ¼” pipes run to the passenger’s side. 9ft of pipe gives a nice little gallon or more of extra fuel. I need the hitch and I have yet to purchase the secondary tank but the original frame mounted reserve is mounted on the driver’s side. It also has a 3/16” shield which wraps around to protect it. The thing weighs about 45 lbs. <O</O Because of the 9” rear’s offset there is room for the stock reserve tank but a like sized tank will not fit on the passenger’s side. So if I can’t locate a long and narrow tank preferably something ford that will fit I may have to fabricate one. All that needs to be done is to pressure test the tank to 40 psi and it’s golden. I’ve been thinking about Mig-ing up a cylinder to hold 15-20gal from steel or if I can get the new Tig welder aluminum. There are a couple of Custom Bike shops in my area and once I finish the tank I could ask them to send it out to be certified too. A good idea incase you get in an accident. It would still be a lot easier to find a good used tank though and just put it in. I was criticized in a different post for considering replacing the Steel tanks with Plastic ones to reduce weight. But considering the changing cost of Fuel Making the truck 100 to 200 lbs lighter couldn’t hurt the MPG. Just like when guys remove the steel body components and replace with lighter Kevlar and fiberglass wheel wells, fenders, hood, and quarters. I’m not doing that but lightening the load is always a positive thing. I’m just not a real fan of Plastics for the body of a work vehicle. What are the dimensions on the late 90’s Ranger tank? I.E. LxWxH? Also other than Ebaying a new one what is the average cost of a used Ranger tank? John
Hey cammer,
thanks for replying. I'll just sit back and read being that I was wanting to look you up for the same reason.
Get us updated on truck. I love the idea (not the time though) of installing that lincoln dash. The rear end is a given.
