I recently obtained a 1977 F250 Custom as a drivetrain parts donor for my 68' 250 Ranger. Unfortunately I haven't been able to take a real close look at it and wont be for a few weeks. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it has for a transfer case, front/rear end, etc. I know it has a 400 motor in it and a c6 tranny. The guy I got it from is the original owner and hasn't changed anything. He claims that when he bought it he got it with all the heavy duty parts. Anything that anyone could tell me about this truck would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Was there any type of heavy duty option availiable for a 77 f250?
If its stock, the front axle should be a low-pinion Dana 44 with open knuckles and disc brakes.
For the '73-'75 trucks you could get the standard duty (3300lb GAWR) Dana 44 or the Heavy-Duty (3550 GAWR) Dana 44. The basic difference was in the size of the knuckles, bearings and lockout hubs. I am guessing that the same basic option carried forward after the switch to open knuckles and disc brakes.
When you get to see the truck, check the data plate on the door jam, if the front axle has a GAWR over 3500lbs or so it's probably HD. You can also eyeball the lockout hubs - if the hub tapers to 1/2 ton sized lockouts, its the light duty axle. If there is no taper and the hubs are considerably larger, then it is the HD axle.
custom was a package with no chrome trim but you could order anything on these trucks gross weight packages 6300 to 8400 if it's a parttime t-case it's a NP205 fulltime would be NP203 rear end would be a d60, front would must likley d44hdf heavy duty parts in one of these would be the gvw package maybe a 75 amp alt (stamped on alt case) bigger radiator and some had bigger rear brakes (shoe width)
