I just bought a new Edelbrock 1406 for my truck. It looks like I need to buy a universal fuel line kit for it. I have an auto transmission. Does anyone know if Im going to have to buy the Ford throttle linkage adapter too? Any other suprises? Would I be better off taking the edelbrock back and buying an oem replacement?
I would take it back I like the Edelbrock & Carter seires carbs they are far easier to tune than a stock carb yes you may need the ford kit with the auto trans but I would mount it first and check use the tuners book that came with the carb it can help you dial the carb into what you want you may need different jets or metering rod or springs but when your done you will be very happy I have put this carbs on a 70 428 mach 1 and a 77 bronco with a 302 my bronco got like 14-18 in town and 20 on the highway and if I was towing my old camping trailer (1968 Ranch El Rae)I got about 10-12 and it wieghted in at about 3200 lbs I use a equalizer hitch and trailer brakes I live in Salt Lake City and to get out of town its a climb I use to tow my trailer up Parleys canyon I-80 at 50-65 and thats a 6% grade with no sputtering and use it for some ruff 4 wheeling too
You will need the Ford kit to hook up the AT kickdown linkage properly. You can do it without it by fabricating parts but the kit is easier.
The 1406 is a very easy carb to tune. From what I have seen of the OEM rebuilds the edelbrock is much better. Have you made any other modifications to the engine or emissions? If you have, the OEM unit will not work correctly, and they are very hard to tune without some baseline data.
I have no idea what is in the fuel line kit or why you would need it. I did not need it when I hooked my 1406 up on my 78 400.
Get the AT kickdown, its only about $10-15. The fuel line kit I believe is just the banjo swivel fitting to drop the inlet below the air filter. The Edelbrock is awesome, worked right out of the box for me, just some idle speed and choke adjustment. I bought the rod and jet tuner kit, but thats just because I wanted to experiment.
Your engine should have both vacuum and mechanical advance in the distributor for street use.
The distributor should use the venturi or ported vacuum source for the main (outermost) vacuum port. A temperature sensing switch is used also to control the vacuum source to the outer or main vacuum port. When the engine is cold full vacuum is directed to the main vacuum port. When the engine warms up the temperature vacuum switch moves and connects the venturi vacuum to the main distributor vacuum port. Some distributors have a dual vacuum port modulator, on these the inner unit is connected to full vacuum.
