Po740 Code
I had to replace the engine in my 99 Ranger.Upon startup with the new engine my transmission threw this PO740 code which is a Torque converter clutch issue.
The symptoms are very consistant.The o/d light comes on after I get up to HI or OD and stay there for awhile,usually a few minutes.Once the light comes on and I approach a stop or slow down situation, the downshift out of second into first is really dry as well as the upshift from first to second.I like to ride the back dirt roads and most generally never reach 25 MPH.The light never comes on driving the back roads.
There is a noise that goes with this which has a sound like a fan hitting something and I can feel it by holding my hand on the tranny pan.
If I stop and turn the truck off,it will repeat the same sequence.The light may come on a little sooner but it won't come on until I hit HI or OD.
Should I pull the tranny?Ron
