i just noticed my power steering pump howling when you turn the wheel so i checked fluid added a little. i know the big tires doesnt help it but is something i should worry about!
Use a turkey baster to remove the fluid in the reservoir. Top it off with some mobil 1 synthetic. Drive it for a few days and repeat to cycle as much of the old out as you can. Did it a few weeks ago myself and I've had no more whining.
You might consider making sure all those front-end components have been greased properly. It makes a huge difference, particularly when you live where things get rusty.
Ford pumps are famous for howling. My 87 Mustang did it all the time when turning at low speeds. It might mean that your pump is on the way out, but also check:
What vehicle was your pump from? Some Ford pumps use ATF not power steering fluid. Mustang pumps are like that. Make sure you have the correct fluid in the pump.
If you do not have a serpentine belt make sure the belt on the power steering pulley is tight enough. You may be hearing the belt slip when the pump is in use. Also check the belt's drive surface for shine. If it shines is shot and needs replace.
