Tunning up an E4OD, need advice.

I have a 95 150 4wd. I am thinking of getting a computer chip - I've been told that a chip does wonders for the way these trannys shift. Somone sugested that as well as the chip, to get firmer shifting, I could change the accumulator in the tranny. And there was a B&M shift kit for it.

I am un-educated when it comes to the opperation of an auto tranny. I understand what a higher stall converter will do, but I do not want this. What will a shift kit do for me? And what does the accumulator do and what will a different one do for me? Lastly, how hard is it to change these parts?

Chips do help the e4,I have a Bully Dog chip in my 7.3. It raises line press. to firm up
the shifts and keeps the conv. locked when you let off the throttle.A shift kit will also
firm up the shifts w/out raising line press.Install is no problem.I have since installed
a Baumann TCS to have FULL control of all trans. functions-line press.,shift points,
and TC clutch. What a difference! Anyway, hope that helps.

As I understand, I can't get a programer for my truck, just a fixed program chip.

That aside, what does a shift kit do, and how hard is it to install? Can it be done through the pan with the tranny in the truck?

What is the function of an accumulator?

The shift kit install takes a few hours. You need to drop the pan and valvebody-tranny stays in truck. The accumulator is a springloaded valve that softens the shift. The oil compresses the spring behind the accum. valve as the clutches and bands are being applied.A kit makes the shifts happen faster by enlarging holes in the separator plate or shortening the stroke of valve in the accum. You're just allowing oil press. to build faster to make the shift faster. There's less slip and less heat so it's better for the tranny.
