I have to replace one rotor on my truck because it is warped, do I have to recplace the other side also? Also the one I am replacing was cut into by the bare metal brake pad, dont ask. Thanks
You don't need to replace both rotors. If you replace one, though, they should both be resurfaced.
People will probably argue with me about this, but I promise you that if you go to a brake shop they won't replace rotors or drums in pairs unless they're ripping you off.
I didnt think so, but its late and I havent went to the only shop that I trust to ask him yet. So which one are you saying needs to be resufaced? Thanks for the quick response too.
You should resurface the old one and the new one so that the same texture is on each. Also, replace both sets pads. Do not reuse the old pads unless they are new. Then do the proper breakin. The breakin requires several slow speed abrupt stops with a cool down in between. Then do several higher speed abrupt stops with a cool down. Do the cooldown each time. If you don't, you will warp the rotors and all your time and money will be wasted.
Actually, for me I replace rotors in pairs, not to disagree with Andy, as I do calipers, drums and wheel cylinders.
Ok, I just saw where he said BOTH. lol I know not to reuse the old pads, could be very bad. Could someone expalin the breakin a little more for me? My repair manual doesnt say anything about it, never heard of doing that.
In breaking in new pads, you need to make at least five slow speed hard stops, gradually increasing your speed each time with a cool down between each stop. Do this for slow speeds, upt to say 40, then a couple up to 60. Choose a area where you can safely do this and let the brakes cool off between each stop.
