I have factory low mount swing out mirrors from a '79 F150. I need a new 5/16 ALUMINUM rivet to repair the lower pivot. I've checked with all the local suppliers with no luck (Ford, aftermarket, auto parts stores, farm stores, hardware stores, fastener suppliers). I would prefer to have the correct aluminum rivet, not a bolt. Any suggestions? What have you done to repair yours?
I just bought some 1/4" by mail-order from an industrial supply house. I will get the name and post it later tonight when I get home. Had to buy a box of 50, they were about $15.00 for the box plus freight. If 1/4" will work for you, you can email me your address and I'll send you enough for a couple mirrors. God only knows when I'll find another use for the remaining 42!
Well, 73Custom, I have led you astray. I just re-read your message and realized I was thinking of the wrong rivet. What I thought you were talking about was the rivet nut that attaches the hoop bracket to the door skin.
The place I was going to tell you about is MSC Industrial Supply. I checked their catalog, and didn't see anything that looks like the rivet you want. Sorry. Hope I didn't get your hopes up.
But, while I have it handy, MSC is at 800-645-7270. They have distribution centers around the U.S. They are the only major industrial supplier I've found that will sell retail by credit card. Seems like the other big guys, like Grainger and McMaster, only sell wholesale.
Good luck in your search. Let the rest of us know if you find it, and where!
