'87 4.9 w/broken timing gears.
Is this an interference engine?

depends were you driving it when it did this? only real way to find out is pull the head off and see.

drove it home.
parked it.
would not start the next morning.
motor turns over but cam does not turn.

then i say you got luck and are fine. this happend to me once on an fe motor.

Yeah, I just bought the truck in this condition.
Guess I'll go get greasy now.

It's a non-interference engine.

You'll need a puller to get the harmonic balancer off, and another puller to get the timing gears off. If you've spun the motor, you'll have to make sure you line it up so the valve timing is right. If you can still see the dots on the timing gears, you can spin one around until you get them lined up right.
