Truckliest: Late model ZF. Need juice clutch
Alternative: old model T19, no od, juice or mechanical clutch
Semi truckly: Late model Mazda built M5OD. Need juice clutch, no low first, has OD.
Just a manual with OD: Early to mid '80s 4 speed OD trans that look like an old top loader. No low first, gap 2nd to 3rd, has OD, if your V8 will wind to 4000 rpm and you don't live in hill country.
Car like: Old ford top loader.
Car like with OD: Late model T5, get one from a Cobra not a 4 cylinder Mustang.
High dollar: Find a wrecked Viper.
El Cheapo: 303 3 speed from a truck of your vintage.
Best bet:
Rebuild your C4, put a Gear Vendors unit behind it. 6 speeds, firm shifts.
