Finally... first "timed" runs...

Not exactly what I was hoping for, especially after spending thousands and investing so much time in this pile of junk!

I guess I don't need to be complaining, since it IS finally running good, with parts from front to back that seem to get along fairly well with one another... motor-TC-gears, etc...

Still got the hood off for now, but put the air cleaner back on and hooked up the Gtech meter and off we went. Found a good straightaway, lined her up and let her rip. But when I saw the numbers, I coulda puked...

First run: Floored it from a standing stop... not a good idea, as it absolutely baked the right rear, spinning well into second. No telling how much time was lost just spinning. Result - a very dissapointing low 17 @ about 82mph. (1/4) 0-60 was in the 9 sec range.

Second run: The Gtech doesn't start counting until it feels a sudden "jolt", so I tried a rolling start from about 10mph... when I mashed it, the moon and stars must have been aligned, because BOTH tires started spinning, even though it's not posi... rear end kicked out to the right, then back to the left (fishtailing), then hit second pretty hard, but like before, precious time was given up... lemme tell ya it's hard to watch the seconds clicking off, knowing you're not getting anywhere!! Anyway, I knew this one was at least better than the first, even though it still sucked enormously, as the 0-60 flashed in the eights, and the time finally stopped at a mid-16 quarter @ 84mph.

Drove her back home... locked up the shop.

I know there are plenty of variables other than horsepower... tire pressure, better (stickier) tires, suspension components that aren't 30+ years old, weight (heavy tool box delete), etc, but damn, this sucks ****!

And not that I'm proud of any of this crap, but I just figured it was my duty to share the info with my FTE bretheren!

Well, at least I had the fever back for a day or so!!

And about the Gtech - That thing's slicker than snot if you have something that's actually fast... but if not, (like me), you'll think the seconds are NEVER gonna stop clicking off!!!

Hrm... I wonder if someone took one of those units to the track, and compared results, how accurate would it be?

Have you thought about not just stomping it to the floor, more of a controlled launch?

That doesn't sound bad to me for an open 3.25 rear diff. At least you don't have all that money and effort into a 6300lb crewcab like some of us

They're supposed to be pretty accurate, at least from what I've read. 1/10th and 3mph in quarter mile. I've read articles where magazines have took them to the track and verified the same.

Controlled launches have never been my strong point, but looks like I'm gonna have to learn to finesse it a bit. Slow down - go faster... hmmm...

Actually, I just put 3.89s in the rear, along with a TCI Streetfighter TC. Still open diff, though.

Remember, that meter doesn't know the difference between spinning tires and slow acceleration.

You're right, Rusty, but it does know when you leave. As soon as it sensed a sudden change in g-force, it starts counting. And believe me, it has no mercy!

HAPPY?? Now there's a word that I haven't used in conjunction with this truck since before the old 302 blew up and this pocket-emptying project started!!!

Yep Get some good sized hides on the back end and maybe a spool to lock-up the rear end...and hold on to your shorts, and watch the ET Drop!!

Drag racing is not the place for Flaming burnouts!! LOL...

Good Luck and keep us posted!!

Well, for more pocket emptying goodness, look no farther than the Richmond Gear Powertrax locker!

Well, as disappointing as the ET may be, the MPH is a better sign of HP. Using that in a speed calculator might show that you're actually making HP, but with the limited traction you are not getting there quickly. So, with that you need to put a L/S rear and try again with some better tires.

Making POWER and getting to the ground is two different games. Good Luck

Put some weight in the back right over the rear axle... I know, more weight, slower acceleration, but it you can hook up, it'll make all the difference.

Even with an LS, you have enough power to spin both tires (the fishtail tells all ), so you'll need better tires no matter what.

In the meantime, throw 500 lbs on top of the rear axle and see what happens.

Not stopped for good... I'll keep at it. This is the fun part, right?? Right. Only two runs yesterday for several reasons... seemed like everywhere I went there was traffic, even on the back roads... and was running out of time, as well as GAS!!

I just spent the last 5 minutes looking at your setup, that should go a lot better than it has. I think it should have potential to run on par with rat's truck, he has the a spool and maybe a bit more stall than you, his 343801 is smaller than your cam.

Imo, your cam is a little big for a 4000lb truck. I think you should run between 90-95 mph, high 14's.
