Question Auto 4X4 Hubs and Driveshaft Question?

Hello Guys,

I have a question concerning a '92 F-150 I-6, EFI, w/4X4 Auto. Locking hubs. I have used the hubs in the past with virtually no trouble, but I noticed here a few months ago that the front driveshaft for the 4-wheel drive has unlocked, but yet the front tires show no signs that the 4-wheel drive is engaged, I have drove it like normal, yadda, yadda, did everything but jack up both sides to see whehther or not it is the hubs that aren't engaged, but as to why the spline, or front axle driveshaft won't kick out from rotation.. I'm stumped at the problem, and I have a '90 F-150 with manual hubs, but the driveshaft kicks out when I unlock the hubs.

Any ideas, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I apologize if this has already been answered before.

Thank you,
Timbersteel

Auto hubs are junk. Swap them out for manual locking hubs. Do a search here and in the axle/tranny forum - yes, it's been covered, but that's ok.

Try putting it back in four wheel drive, drive a bit, then disengage and drive in reverse for a good ways. Sometimes driving in reverse helps free things up...

If you're not sure, find a pretty flat spot, and throw her in 4wd. Edge forward for about 20 or so feet. Shift into 2wd, throw her in reverse, and back up, in a strait line, for 10-15 feet.

That's what works for me, but I hate auto-locking hubs. Maybe with the addition of my second job, I'll be able to throw a few more bucks at my truck.

Take luck.

Hey, thanks guys. I had planned to look into it today, unfortunately the weather did not permit me too. Rained all day then I watched it hail 3 different times in about 40 minutes. I will try it both suggestions, and see how it does. I just finally got a chance to fix the leaking oil pan with the fiberglass bondo trick, that was a Great poor man's trick there.

On another note, I have other problems with it too. I think the main bearing is in bad shape. it's making clickity clicking sound when I start up, and if I put my ear underneath the truck it sounds like it is from that direction. Not near as bad when I use a heavy weight oil, but noticeable whe I use 10w-30. I have the 90 4wd, but it didn't come with AC, and my '04 Dodge hemi..Im just a big truck person

If anyone knows of a good trick trick to find out if that's it let me know. I'm bout ready to sell it. Don't know much when it comes to these trucks, except for all the work I do on my ol' 90 4wd ford. Shop told me about 1500 to pull the engine and all, and I don't have a garage. That's irks me. I'd get a cherry picker for it and maybe do it all myself..Well, didn't mean to make this long, but Thank You Guys for your suggestions, and I will definately give them a try.

Note. I did put it in 4-wheel drive today checking the hubs, both clicked in and then I reversed and clicked them back out. Maybe if it is nice and things dry up, I can get underneath and look at again.

check out the engine building/troubleshooting section further down, and post your question there. You should get loads of advice. I just rebuilt a 306 due to a spun main. The major thing I noticed was that the engine started deep ticking after it got good and warmed up, as opposed to ticking at start up, then going away.....
The old long screwdriver listening device can help zero in on the tick, but as you know, if it's not in the top, you will have to pull it.
I have pictures of the bad parts in a photo album in the gallery section.
Hope those pics aren't in your future....
