Question Gear Oil

Hey everyone, I have a 77 F-250 and I'd like to replace the gear oil in my front and rear ends before winter comes. They are both Dana 60's, what grade to you fellas out there suggest I run? Also what grade for the manual T-18 transmission? None of them have been rebuilt, so they've been used well. Truck has 135,000. Thanks for you time!

I've always put 90 weight in everything, the only drawback is the tranny may be a bit sticky on the real cold mornings, but it's good for the parts.

synthetic 80W90 gear oil on front an rear end and transmission flow easily in cold or hot days, if you have a any minimal leakage use regular 75W90 gear oil or 80w90 gear oil.

Also, if you have a limited slip in the rear you should run friction modifier along with 75W90.

the service manual (1973edition)that i have from ford ,says to use 50 weight motor oil in the np 435 transmission.when i rebuilt mine in 93,i asked the service guy at ford about the oil ,and he confirmed that i should use 50 weight oil.i did and i still do today. i dont think you will harm anything by using 80/90 gear oil, many people swear on it.i use 80/90 weight with friction modifier in my d 60&d 70 diffs.-billy

80W90 for a NP205 and 30 weight for a NP203.

don't use a synthetic if you got a clutch posi unit. you'll never posi again!! trust me :-( if you slap in some regular oil and run it for a thousand miles or until the posi gets grabby again( and i mean GRABBY!!!) then throw in some modifier and you'll be golden..

30w motor oil for the NP203? Isn't that too thin? I ran 80w90 gear oil in my '75 F250 for 20 years. I have a '76 F250 now and I'm pretty sure there's 80w90 gear oil in it. Both trucks came with NP203's. Can anyone set this straight? Thanks.

Those are the factory recomendations. The NP203 is more complicated and has more moveing parts that require constant lubrication(if your 203 hasn't been converted to part time, I could see how 80w90 would still work).
I'll try to find a web site stating this.

This is one site saying to use 10W40, but I know it says 30W in the owners manuel.

Thanks MMBFord, Both trucks had been converted. I don't know which kit is in my '76. I might just take it apart before winter and replace the conversion with the shaft kit if it hasn't already been done. I believe my '75 had the crown gears and that worked OK. The shaft type does look much stronger. That web site had some good information. Thanks again.

The Haynes manual I have for 73 - 79 pickups and Broncos says to use 140w in the manual trans. Is this just incorrect? I also want to replace my tranny lube in my 73 3 speed but the thing doesn't look anything like the book. The Haynes book shows upper fill plug and lower drain plug. I have a plug on the right side and what looks like a sending unit on the left side forward of the shift linkage. Is the the fill hole. I do not know what trans is in the truck as the cover that probably contains the numbers is on top of trans. Is 50w oil still the answer?

Hello waterbrat,
I have the same Haynes manual. 140w gear oil is not wrong for a manual transmission if you can find it. Most auto stores will sell 80w90. I see that you live in Austin, TX. 80w90 would be fine for your area. I've noticed that below 0 degrees 80w90 is very thick and the shifter is hard to move until the transmission is warmed up. At low temps my Jeep would actually move forward a foot in nuetral just because of thick gear lube. Once the gears get moving, everything gets loosened up.
I don't know what transmission you have but you shouldn't have to pull a sending unit to fill. There should be a pipe plug half way up the side of the transmission. I didn't know that they put 3 speed manual transmissions in Broncos. What engine and transfer case do you have? Someone out there will be able to help you.
