The first Chinese car to be sold in Europe has scored zero * the worst-ever score * in safety tests.
The JiangLing Landwind was displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week and is expected to arrive in British showrooms within months. It is already on sale in Holland, Germany and Belgium and has been billed as the vanguard of a new invasion of Chinese vehicles.
The two-ton 4x4 scored zero stars in crash tests last week by the ADAC, the German automobile club, which carries out tests for Euro NCAP. "It had a catastrophic result," said a spokesman for the ADAC. "In our 20-year history no car has performed as badly."
Testers calculated that a driver would be unlikely to survive a head-on collision at 40mph, and in a side-on collision at 30mph the driver would suffer severe head and chest injuries due to a lack of side protection.
"This car seems to belong in the 1990s in terms of engineering," said Chris Patience, head of technical policy at the AA Motoring Trust. "We will wait for the official Euro NCAP results, but if it really is that bad we hope people will think very carefully before buying this car."
With an expected £10,000 price tag, the Landwind is designed to rival cars such as the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson, both about £5,000 more expensive. The Chinese maker plans to sell at least 1,000 models before July 2006.
Looks like a cloned Isuzu Rodeo from what I saw of it. Then again, the Chinese have been revolutionary enough to use Chevy blueprints when stealing their way to designs...
One would think they would have learned from the "garboige" that Hyundai and Yugo for that matter put out in the 90s. Yikes.
That doesn't surprise me because of what I have read about Chinese built small atv's. Those atv's use "cheap" grade fastners and the engines are Honda clones as a rule.
I would hardly think that full size vehicles would be any better.
i dont see a sales issue, just export to the US and have a fancy commericial showing mom apple pie and some cowboys, and slap a surfboard on, and it will sell.
If you start/stop the video you'll notice the airbag doesn't employ until the front wheel is so far back its under the A pillar. Shortly after it does, the entire steering column has been pushed to the right, leaving the driver with no support. Will we see Harbor Freight dealerships? I hope I can get one in industrial tool orange.
Ok, I SURE HOPE the US safety inspections dont let this piece of crap into the nation.
the chinese do have a knack for making stuff, but they dont know how to make it safe enough to keep the operator alive yet. I've seen their shindaiwa 488 chainsaw knockoff, its CRAP.
I saw that on another site a while back... it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I was in an accident in a '70 Chevy truck one time that was kind of similar to that... I whacked my head on the upper door frame, and that's it. Lab belt, no air bag. I would LOVE to be on the design team that built that. I also think it'd be cool to send the designers over to let's say, Volvo while they designed a totally new vehicle, and watch their reactions.
I like that "harbor freight" comment... that's great
Those people can take their landwind and bl** me. I have not seen one thing come from that hole that shown a spec of quality. Low grade everything. You cannot even fix any of the trash they are pumping into this country. They are nothing but clueless manufacturers of disposable garbage. They should stick with food, the only thing they are half decent at. But other than that, I dont have a problem with them...
Sad, pathetic, yet not unexpected Ever been to the Dollar Store? Theres a reason that stuff is only a dollar. I had Tonka trucks when I was a kid built better than that. . .
Who wants to make a guess as to where they stick the little gold "Made In China" sticker?
-I say it will be under the dash somewhere

Whos the real fool, the one who makes it or the one who buys it?
