coke machine for garage

I have a chance to get a 70's coke machine. Only problem is that the machine doesn't cool. The motor turns on but I assume its low on freon or what ever. Does anyone have any idea of cost to have it serviced or is it possible to recharge myself.

Look it over, it may just need the dust blown out of the condensor. It could be charged with either R12 Freon or R22 ammonia, most likley the latter. Have you let it run a while? No idea on the cost but any competant refrigeration guy could service it.

if it is 0f the 70's vintage it is most likely uses Dichlorodifluoromethane (R-12). you could be lucky enough that it only a plugged condencer but are you sure the compressor is running and not just the fan?

Chlorodifluoromethane has the trade designation of R-22.
Ammonia is R-717 and not used that tpye of refrigeration system.
Freon is a trade name of the Dupont co.
The first significant developments in fluorochemical research began at General Motors(GM) in the 1920s. GM, and its subsidiary Frigidaire, had been searching for nontoxic, nonflammable substitutes for existing refrigerants. Researchers discovered a promising alternative in dichlorodifluoromethane, later called Freon 12. Lacking the capacity to produce Freon® in large quantities, GM turned over subsequent development to DuPont in a joint venture called Kinetic Chemicals Company.
Further fluorochemical research led to the discovery of polytetrafluoroethylene, which DuPont would later trademark Teflon.

Another consideration is do you want to pay the extra cost of electricity, just to have a bunch of cold sodas?

Then again, you can load it with cerveza.

Just something to think about.

If it does take R12, isn't that stuff expensive?

Otherwise, go for it.

also most are sealed systems no fill port. so it would be almost impossible for the freon to escape unless the lines were cut. my guess is the condensor is plugged. and yes r12 is about 100.00 a pound

So if it is a cut line, he would have to have a fill valve soldered/brazed in and then recharge it. $$$$$

I remember about 25 years ago when you could buy R12 at Grand Auto for $1.99 for a 12oz. can.

Times have changed.

Hope it is just a plugged condensor.

$100 a pound!!! WOOOHOOOO! I have 5 cans I've been hoarding for years waiting for the charge in my truck's AC to go down. So far, its lasted. (Knock on wood) I would have never guessed it was worth that much. Last I heard (8-10yrs ago) it was $30/lbs.

I used to work on them for Coca-cola when I was in college. I is possible to recharge them, but you will need a refridgerant tech to do this. It is either a Cavalier, Dixie Narco brand. Try them direct or try this link. You can buy the compressor and evaporator as a unit. Easy to replace.

These guys may have exactly what you are looking for. Not cooling was a common problem. It was usually a dead compressor. Check to make sure it is running, if not may just be the starter capacitor.

To begin with R12 is NOT anywhere NEAR $100 a pound. It had gone up in cost, but now that the cars requiring it are hitting the junkyards in record number demand is rapidly declining thus the price is rapidly falling. I bought a 30 pound cannister a few months ago for $14 per pound.

Secondly, I would check voltage to the compressor first to see if the thermostat, defrost timer or whatever control circuit is involved is the culprit. These units are hermetically sealed and rarely leak.

Best of luck,
Doc

A simple bypass of the thermostat would work. As MBdiagman said they are sealed. With the compressor located on the bottom and not much to protect it from the back, damage could be the culprit if it has in fact leaked.

I was working on these machines in the late 70's and early 80's. I could tell you stories of the things I have seen that damaged the lines.

Just my 2 cents.

Old Coke machines have a "Kool" factor, but just to have a few cold ones on hand in the shop it makes much more $ sense to buy a brand new 80.00 undercounter/dorm refrigerator.

If you find out that it is indeed low or out of refridgerant, it must have leaked out somewhere, and if it is recharged will most likely leak out again. The leak must be fixed first before attempting to re-fill. Just a thought if its using $100/lb. R-12 it could be expensive up keep.

Another thought would be to retrofit a newer compressor with a more earth freindly, and probably more efficient compressor system.
