update with a question

Hello Hello! It's been a while but I'm back with a small update and a question. I had posted earlier about my c6 transmission overheating and burning up the fluid. That problem was simply enough solved (or at least the symptom was). All I had to do was change the thermostat to 180 ep instead of the 195 that was in it when I bought it. That cooled the radiator enough to cool the fluid enough that being so close to my exhaust lines doesn't effect it adversely anymore!

Now for my question. I also previosly wrote about this but now I have more information. I found the ever elusive complete vin number. It is :

F10GREE9314 2 0 75 F101 4 11J K A

Now I know what the first part is about it's an F100, 302 from San Jose California I believe but I'd like to know what the colors were and the rest of the information that the vin number provides so if you can help me out I'd appreciate it. Feel free to email me or post. It doesn't matter.

Ok. Don't think I'm a complete idiot but, that says it's for the 78. Mine is supposed to be a 79. Where did you get those pictures. I mean I can tell they're from a book but I was wondering what book and where did you get it? If it's something other people can acquire for their year vehicles, etc.? Can you maybe find it in a library somewhere or something to that effect.

F10 G R EE9314 2 0 75 F101 4 11J K A

The EE9314 isn't listed and I don't know which of the other numbers go with which of your pictures. A little help pls?? But seriously thanks for the site.

Okay , Some Of the Codes are the same .
The EE9314 is the consecutive build code
EE9314 Should be the first month of the Build year.

Had you typed in the codes in the way they appear on the tag you would have made it a lot easier to decipher.

11 is the axle code and no it's not listed.
The J after the 11 means Power steering equipped.
The F101 Code is the pickup code with a GVW of 4800lb

I get my info from the shop manual.

Since you have the data plate to go by,maybe you can repost with them
in the proper place.

update with a question

I got my numbers off of the metal plate stuck to the original warranty card. I typed it with the spaces in the same place. The door sticker is no longer there and the place that the previous owner had paint it, didn't see fit to put all of the information on the replacement sticker. I was lucky to find the metal plate that was supposed to be on the warranty card. It was buried in a crack in the glove box under the owners manual. I restuck it to the warranty card where it was supposed to be.

What I would really like to know right now, is if the c6 transmission I bought it with is what it was sold with and what the original colors were. I was told by a family friend and ford mechanic of 20 something years that usually the 302 didn't come with a c6 (which explains why every book I've looked in says the 302 and the c4 together and the c6 with the 351's and bigger. I was also told that some 302's came with a c6 by special order. This was sold originally to a furniture company which lends credibility to that idea but is not proof.

The interior is red and it was repainted silver on the outside. I've seen a red and grey/silver 78 that had red interior and I'm kinda wonderin' if mine wasn't sort of the same.

Shouldn't one part of this tell me the transmission. I sincerely wish that I had the original sticker on the door but all I've got is the metal plate that they put on the original warranty card. The truck was bought (or the warranty was started) 8-29-79. The numbers stamped on the plate are in two rows but the way I typed it earlier is in order from left to right top row then bottom row. I don't know if that makes any difference or not. I'll see if I can't get a pick of it to put up here so you can see what I'm talking about.

Now That I have that EXTRA Information
I can decode some of this for you.

The advantage of being an Original owner with the warranty card and the data plate intact I guess.
Here we go.

>F10GREE9314 =Vin # The G = 302

2 = ?
0 = Silver Metallic
75 = DSO Phoenix Ariz
F101 = Pickup Code 2x4 4800lb GVW
4 = Styleside Pickup Code
11 = 2.73:1 Non-Locking Rear
J = Power steering
K = 3 Spd Auto Transmission Code ,New For 79 Most probably a C6
A =? I don't have this on my warranty card

update with a question

Ok so here's a question. I'm guessing that maybe the 2 is the interior color and the A could be that it's a ranger package? Maybe? I don't know if yours is a ranger package but if not maybe that's why the A isn't on there. Your guess is as good as mine.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-May-02 AT 02:54 PM (EST)]As per my Sig :
I have a Ranger Explorer.

I need to know exactly what interior you have to tell what the code is for your truck.
Do you have photo's of it?
You should have carpet.
I just need to know about seats > Bench> cloth/vinyl
Cloth > Colour > all this stuff.

Are you aware that Rating Plates as they are called,can be made for you.It will require a rubbing of the Vin #

I will find out tomorrow what the A and the 2 represent.

Anyway, For what I have found you, I Hope I have helped you Connie

Ok. Well, the carpet was replaced. I can tell that anyway but the guy who sold it to me told me as much. It's a cloth bench seat that's a maroon/red color. The headliner is the same and the dash and all of the metal inside the truck is that color except for like the ceiling around the headliner and the parts that are actually parts of the cab. They are all the original silver. The doors are silver too. There are no door panels; the guy couldn't find them. There's no tilt steering, no cruise control, none of that fancy stuff. It's has a (still working) a/c and heater and it came with an am only radio I beleive but now it's got a dinky little casette deck. The badges all say f100 ranger and the glove box says ranger on it so it's definantly a ranger package. It's a long bed. I don't know if any of that is relevent but ya never know.

It was repainted back to it's original silver color and my friend who has a 78 has pretty much the same colors that mine does except the outside of his is a 2 tone silver and red. I didn't think but I could probably ask him about his vin number and see if they're simular.

I also discovered under the hood, on the firewall there is a metal plate with the vin and stuff on it but, from what I could see of it, it's different than what's on my warranty card plate. I tried to see if I could pull it off but my screwdriver wasn't big enough and my dad was in a hurry to get home with it. I'll have someone make a pencil rubbing of it for me so that I can find out what the difference in the numbers are but what I'm wondering is if the numbers are different, which set is right if either of them are?

I also want to know how you can tell if the engine and transmission are original. My pontiac fanatic friend can find the numbers on his cars and go to the net and find out if the block and transmission numbers match with what the car had originally. Is there something like that for Ford or is he seriously filling me full of it? I've never seen this website but he's always lookin' into this stuff and always comes back knowing more than when he left.

I will try to get some pictures. I know some people that have digital cameras, etc. and I've wanted to get pics of it for a while. My friend is a photography student so I think she's going to use it for one of her projects.

The tag under the hood is a Buck Tag used by ford for the assembly line. Don't lose it.

I can get you some info on the interior from what you posted.

FDord stopped stamping the VIN on the block back in the 60's.
Now it is Close dating.

For casting numbers look on these particular parts.

Look for a D8TE-B number and also numbers in between these figures.
ie: * 8L22 *

Block : up in behind the starter
Intake manifold
Exhaust manifold
Heads.

Also, When someone here has taken the time to help you out.

Please take the time to THANK THEM !

Ok. The information on the "Buck Tag" should be the same as on the warranty card right? And I will look for the numbers on the block, heads, etc.

And I am sorry for not showing my gratitude. I do greatly appreciate all the help I can get. The people I know and talk to here at home, don't like ford so this about the only place I can go to learn anything. I keep forgetting on the pc you can't just give the tx thanks and be done with it, you actually need to say it so thanx a lot.

Great !

Now,
Is there an Vinyl on the seats ?
The buck tag will have different coding that pertains to line info for the installers.

The warranty card has the most info for quick ID on the lot.

On the rating plate (on the door) there is a spot for Body.
That has the style of seat,the colour,and Truck style.

There are 3 knit & vinyl bench seat codes
E
U
Z

A photo of the seat would help

There are 2 colour codes for interior:
N
D

So any combination of TWO letters of the above then ending in 4 would be your Body code.

I wish I had pics right now but that will certainly be the next thing that I do. The guy who sold it, was redoing the whole thing. The seat was taken out, the seatbelts, and the carpet. He replaced whatever the original carpet was with some grey stuff and when he sold it, he just placed the stuff back in it instead of bolting it all up. He didn't even have all the bolts and stuff or else I'd have had it done by now. Best description of the seat I can give you is it's a full bench seat, cloth, with the vinyl in the middle and on the outside two edges of the seat and the back rest but the actual sides (the part that faces the door) is cloth. There's no fancy pattern at all. Well, I guess until I can get some pics and the pencil rubbing of that tag I couldn't get off, I'm kind of stuck. As soon as I get that information and some pics, I'll be back. Oh and as for the door tag, when it was repainted, the shop didn't bother to put all the information on the sticker. I don't know if the original was so gone that they couldn't get the information or if they just didn't do it but that sticker has absolutely no relevant information on it anymore. I wish it did. Thanks for the help and I'll be back. Maybe tonight...who knows.
