The axle shaft is independent of the hub, it is not used to hold the hub to the housing. The hub is held onto the housing via bearings and a nut. It's the 8-lug axle you see on 3/4 and 1 tons. Darn near indestructible.

even if you ring an axle shaft you can still drive on the tire. It just wont pull.
Not like say a 9" when you ring an axle shaft you get out your ol' jack and pick your rearend off the dirt.

a full floating rear axle has a spindle tube with two wheel bearings on each side these carry all the load weight and the axle bolts to the hub and doesn't have any weight on it It basically floats between the hub and side gear in the diff. f150 has what is called a semi floating rear end it has one wheel bearing pressed on the axle so the axle takes all the load weight and twisting force
