This may be a dumb question, but what's the difference between the engine-to-tranny connection on a manual and automatic?
I've pulled my 460 off the C6 a few times and all I did was pull the engine-to-tranny bolts and 4 flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. However, I've never pulled the 351 off a manual tranny.
Is the process fairly similar? I don't even know what the flywheel bolts to, but does it unbolt as easy as the auto? Are there any tricks to reassembly?
If someone could clue in the clueless here, I'd appreciate it.
the easiest way to pull a manual is to pull the bolts between the bellhousing and the tranny, then ur clutch will stay on the engine. the tranny will be a little box and its actually pretty small. most manual trannies have different bellhousings so its not like a tranny where they are part of the tranny
The flywheel bolts to the engine, just like the flexplate on the C6. The difference is the flywheel is much heavier than the flexplate. The pressure plate then bolts to the flywheel with the clutch disc sandwiched in between. The manual trans input shaft slides into the clutch disc. As fordboy_52 said, the easiest way is to unbolt the trans from the bellhousing and slide it back & down. The whole clutch assembly will stay bolted to the flywheel.
For reassembly go get yourself a clutch alignment tool. They're not expensive and will save you a bunch of time manhandling the trans around to make the splines line up. You just install the pressure plate & disc assembly on the flywheel loosely, insert the alignment tool, snug the bolts, remove the tool and install the trans.

Thanks for the info guys. That clears up a few things.
All I really need to do is get the engine out. Are you saying I have to pull the tranny first? Can I pull the engine without removing the tranny? If so, do I have to support the tranny with something?
I just pulled mine last weekend, Just takeout the 4 tranny bolts that screw into the bellhouse. The engine should be slid up and out (toward the front of truck) to detatch it from the tranny gearbox. The bellhouse will come out with the engine.
