I recently swapped a tired 302 for a 351. I have a miss. Do I need to change the computer since the firing order on a 351 is different than that of a 302. Any suggestions on what I need to do to get the 351 running better?
I was told I could swap the firing order of 2 plug wires and that would help and it did some. I am not sure on the timing and am going to take it to a Ford mechanic that has a good reputation and equipment to do a diagnostic test. I do like the extra power. Where would you suggest purchasing an ECU at. Junkyard or parts store?
ok first dont take it to the mechanic. we can help you from right here. first off you need to run the 351w fireing order period. for an ecu and all your other answers to pulling codes using a paper clip go to www.fordfuelinjection.com
what tranny do you have?
I am not sure on the tranny. I know it is the electronic one. Just recently rebuilt. I will check codes but it will probably be tomorrow before I can get to it. This Bronco belongs to my son who is serving in Iraq right now. I am trying to get evrything back to normal on his truck before he gets home in February. I do not want to wait till last minute.I will also check the transmission. I did notice his electronic 4X4 is not working either.
Thanks and feel free to send anymore suggestions.
your tranny is the e4od which is good because it was offered behind the 5.8 as well as the 5.0 so finding an ecu should be very easy. Napa sells new ones as does ford but could be spendy. have you checked for vacum leaks? that may cause what your experiencing. might also change the fuel filter if it hasnt been done in awhile. the electronic tcases are prone to this issue. try a search on this forum and all so do a search on the web for Bronco forums there is a few others out there with great info on this issue and many others.
oh and by the Way. Thank you for your sons service of our country.
I did not install this engine. I did notice that some of the vacum lines have a plug in them. I was going to use the chart on the hood to check vacum hose routing. Is there a better place to go for a vacum diagram? The vacum line to the cruise was not even hooked up but it is now. I was going to change the fuel filter in my processes.
Thanks for the reply about my son serving in Iraq.
well... first off make sure that firing order is correct... its 4 wires, not 2...
A 302 PCM will run a 351W flawless... My buddy ran like that for 2 years... I would still recomend replacing it... I have gone the other direction from a 351 to a 302 and ran the 351 computer, and it does not work very well that way... mega overfueling... so the proper comuter will give you proper fueling.. both run batch fire on the injectors....
Also the vacuum system is very basic on those... most are hard plastic lines that cant be run to the wrong component....
mr.bob saying that is incorrect. there is a reason the ecu's are different because a larger motor needs more fuel for one. so basicly you can cause damage to the larger motor by running the smaller motor ecu.
firing order is important because of the cam in the motor.
Thanks for the clarification. I talked with the Ford parts department about an ECU yesterday and they asked about the year of the 351 motor. I think it came out of a 1996 pick-up but I am not sure. They listed 4 diffirent ECU's for 1996. Any suggestions on which one or how to choose the correct one?
