Advance Auto told me their house brand is filled with Havoline. They stock it right next to the Havoline brand and it is in red/black containers as well. Does the housebrand have a lesser add pack. I know for a fact that Napa branded oil is actually Valvoline and it in fact does have lesser additive pack than the Valvoline branded stuff, and I know this because I called Valvoline's tech line and askek them about it when I found my mechanic uses Napa oil because he's a Valvoline nut, and he likes the idea of knowing he is getting his Valvoine cheaper... Too bad about the cheeper add pack, as if Valvolines needed to be lessend any more.. geesh!
Seems like I have seen 9maybe here) that the Advance Auto house brand is NOT from Havoline.
The bottle says "compare to Havoline" but I don't think it is Havoline.
Heck I have used it before in various vehicles and truth be known, it is probably a decent oil.
I have visited Advance Auto's web site and e-mailed the following:
What company/companies provide the oil bottled as Advance Auto house brand oil? Where might I find an MSDS and/or product data sheet?
Brian, I would be very surprised if you receive a reply. I hope you do, but most companies consider a question like that as a "trade secret". They don't want their competition to know, or what kind of product / distribution deal has been cut. I hope I am wrong, and if you do find out the answer, I would be interested. Ed
well for the heck of it i went out and boought a bottle and then compared it to my stash of havoline both are 10w30 sl. but in a clear glass test the havoline brand is much darker and the advance is very very light color. the smell is also way different the havoline has a very very pungent smell the other smells tame almsot like valvoline. now when compared to my 2 bottles of sl valvoline 10w30 the color is the same and smell is almost identical. only a uoa can tell for sure. but my guess is valvoline makes their oil.
Well, guess what......
I got two different replies....

Mr. Ashby,
Thank you for contacting CCC Support. Advance Auto Oil is

at your local advance store. If you cannot make it to an advance

Not sure what to think.
Someone needs to recreate the old "Pepsi Challenge".
Pour some Havoline, AAP and Coastal oil (available at AZ) into unmarked glasses, have people take a sip of each and see if the AAP tastes more like the Havoline, or the Coastal.
Let me know what you find out.
On a more serious note, each bottler puts a stamp on the bottom of the bottle. Why doesn't someone compare the Havoline, Coastal and AAP bottle stamps?
Now why would Havoline be much darker than Valvoline?
I've heard people suggest that the clearer the oil, the less impurities it has in it.
Is there any truth to that, or does color have more to do with additive packages and so forth?
Jschira is so cute...he's like the little kid brother you just have to kick to the side and ignore. When he speaks, you just have to consider the source and ignore him.
As I mentioned, some people have made claims that an oils cleanliness or pureness is seen by how clear it is. From my understanding, the oil can be different in color from one batch to another depending on the additive package.
Does anyone know if this is the case?

Exactly. The MSDS only specifies that the color is "amber" or "medium amber". Nothing more. I doubt that there is a real tight spec on color, nothing more specific than "amber". The tighter the spec, the greater the cost and the lower the yield.
No one wants to throw out a batch of oil just because the color is a little darker than usual. "Oops. I put in 1 gallon too much dye. Now we have to throw the whole 10,000 gallon batch away".
Getting back on track....
I have done some checking and have downloaded MSDS for
Havoline 10w30
Coastal 10W30
and
ADV 10W30 (which is, as I recall, the house brand name for their 10W30)
Interesting stuff.
First off, none of the 3 are the same. So, it is reasonable to conclude if the ADV is from either Texaco (Havoline) or Coastal, it is not the same oil as the two's own name branded oil.
The ADV 10W30 MSDS lists Equilion Enterprises, Houston Texas, as the company address. I believe Equilion is a joint venture deal with Shell.
Curious, I went and checked the MSDS for Shell 10W30. It is not the same is ADV 10W30.
So, I have no idea who provides the oil bottled as the Advance Auto house brand.
I do notice the Coastal is solvent dewaxed (not hydrocracked), so I'd shy away from it in favor of more modern stuff.
