I was doing a little trouble shooting with my 2000 ford explorer 4wd sport trying to find a noise in the front end, so my dad and I put the vehicle on jack stands with all four tires off the ground. I started the engine and put it in drive and all four tires started spinning but not equally. The two on the rear were spinning like they should, but the tire on the front drivers side wasn't spinning nearly as fast as the one on the passenger front. When I stopped pressing the accelerator, the three tire were still moving, but the tire on the driver's front would stop. My caliper on that end may be sticking (that is where my noise was coming from), I guess that would make that tire not spin as fast. I think I may have answered my own question!
either you have an LS or open diff and then i would guess your caliper was stuck... redneck way to see is go really fast then stop get out and see if its smoking or giving off an excessive amount of heat
sometimes you can't see any smoke if so grab the caliper with one hand then immediately go to the other side and grab the other caliper with the other hand. if one hand is burning more then you have a caliper sticking
did you try spinning the tires while on the jackstands to see if you could feel any noticable drag? if not... do it!
As a matter of fact, I have it up on jackstands right now. I did spin it by hand, but I didn't notice any drag (compared to the other side). The only thing I am noticing is a rubber to rubber type of sound. And when I removed the caliper the noise totally went away. The noise get is pretty noticeable when you are driving at low speeds. When you apply the brakes is when you hear it the most just as you slow down to around 10 mph. Sometimes you can hear it as you are pulling off(of course without the brake applied). I just changed the seal in the steering knuckle (which would usually solve this problem) but nothing changed. But, after removing the caliper it went away. And after seeing the wheel not spinning like the other side while it is up in the air (the front is an open dif and the rear is LS) that makes me believe that it must be sticking somewhat? The caliper cost about $35 so I will give it a try tomorrow and see if that helps. I will let yall know!
I forgot to post how it turned out. The rotor was warped and was causing my problems. I did change the caliper, but it started making noise again so i changed the rotor.
