So I was wheeling out in the snow covered woods today with my truck. Pretty much left it in 2wd until I got stuck and then would put it in 4wd and get right out. Anyway, I noticed a couple of times when I got stuck in 2wd when I was gassing only the passenger side tire was spinning but the drivers side was sort of jerking forward. That is, it looked like it was trying to spin forward but wasn't. This didn't always happen, but once in a while only one tire would spin. When this was happening and only one tire was spinning I was hearing sort of a rattling sound coming from the rear. As soon as I got the truck unstuck it stopped and all was fine.
My truck DOES have limited slip in the rear and typically if I gun it both tires do spin. Is the one tire stuck and one spinning and the rattle just how a typical limited slip is supposed to work or is the rattle an indication that the clutches inside the rear aren't as strong as they once were and are consequently slipping and my truck is slowly turning into the 1 wheel wonder.
When the going gets tough, the factory limited slip gives up. The key word in this setup us "slip" as it will very easily. Even new they will start slipping when you really get stuck. The noise was probably the clutches working, and the additive you put in the rearend oil for a limited slip helps get rid of that.
What you described is why I don't like the clutch type limited slips. A cone type limited
slip will hold tighter and last longer than the clutch types. For fairly serious off roading
or service needs a good locker will do all the differential and tires can provide in the form
of traction.
