I have been looking at a 351W for a little while now. I got one in Kansas City that the guy is asking $650 for it. It is a 1996. Says it holds good compression. Per him, the truck's odometer said 240,000 miles. Now, he will not include the wiring harness and computer.
My first thought was to buy a complete donor vehicle. But since I stumbled upon this engine, I want to ask you guys what all should come with the engine so that I do not have to spend high dollars getting replacement. I kind of made out a list from www.fordfuelinjection.com
Upper & lower intake, throttle body, fuel rails, fuel injectors, distributor, ignition coil, computer, Sensors (O2 sensors, stator, MAF/MAP, TPS, ECT, BP,VSS, Knock, EVPS), Actuators (IAB, TFI, EGR).
Is there anything that I should get with the engine apart from the above if I do not want to pay a lot buying replacement part?
Also, the truck had a E4OD. Will the computer for this truck run with a C-6? Since I am not getting a computer, I might as well buy one that will go with the engine and a C-6. What computer will that be - meaning year whether EEC-IV, V, etc.?
Did 1996 351W came with MAF or MAP?
ok the 96 would be maf obd-ii or eec-v. honestly you dont want the harness or the ecu . what year rig will this be going into? just get the motor complete with our harness and ecu. make sure everything stays on the motor and i mean everything. then once you have it on a stand take some pics and post them. then we can tell ya what to take off or what needs to stay. 650 is kinda high for that many miles offer him 500 i bet he will take it with cash waived in his face.
but let us know what its going into
It is going into a 79 F100. Problem is, I do not know if I am experienced enough to know if everything is on there. Does the list I mentioned in my first post includes everything?
Get the 351 with all the EFI sensors and parts to make it run, get a wiring harness from Ford Fuel Injection, and get a mustang A9L or A9P computer, and MAF sensor.
It might be a little tricky installing an EFI setup in that 79. You're going to need a high pressure fuel system, and I believe the computers require a speed sensor input, that isn't present on the 79, so you'll have to work around that.
Why not just scrap it and make the 351 a carb'd setup? While the EFI is nice, it won't be a piece of cake to install. Unless you've got some Ford fuel injection knowledge, it'll be a handful.
I have my mind set on EFI. I wouldn't mind recruiting professional help in getting EFI installed. I pretty much have an idea about the high pressure fuel system, but not much on the VSS.
I just want to be able to get the right stuff.
i have a 351w in a 96 f150 strong motor my buddy just stoked one and put the boost to it in a 93 notch back stang the only pro. i have had with EFI is the vac lines and high air flow sence and easy way to fix your wire proble is to call painless wire tell them what you what to have them make you a kit. less head ache and easy to install
painless are a joke and over priced. the vss wont be an issue either because those stang ecu's dont need that info thats what makes them such a good efi upgrade.
go to the site mustang mentioned . best prices on harness's and the quality is top notch
I can't believe no one has mentioned this, but personally, I'd be real wary of buying a motor with that many miles on it. I would definitely not buy it until I did a compression test on it and hooked up a mechanical oil pressure gauge and got a real good idea of the condition of the motor.
Unless I were buying it and intending on rebuilding right away. Then his asking price is too high.
I would have to be in a real tough spot before I resorted to paying $650 to install a tired motor. This swap is going to end up costing you enough as it is, I think. Getting EFI in that truck running is going to be a lot of work.
I definitely agree with Andym. For that kind of cash you might get lucky and find a whole wrecked vehicle with all attachments for that much. At 240K miles on that engine I would pretty much bet it is about to need an overhaul no matter how well it has been taken care of. Just my 2c..........
Ok. I guess you guys answered my question. I am definitely not gonna put a 240K mile engine on my truck. It got to rebuild. Since the asking price is way too much, I think I will pass this one by. But once I get a 351W, I want to go fuel injected route because I think for a daily driver, fuel injected is much better. My carburetor is very moody - now that weather is not to hot not to cold, it is running as good as can. But man! I did have a hard time when it was hot. Wonder what winter will do. Besides, the highway pings irks me to death. The pings lessened after I starting using premium fuel. But still does that at load.
Anyway, so, I decided to go fuel injected !
One final question, any suggestions where I can find a good deal on 351W around Midwest? I don't care if it is a tired motor - I will get it rebuilt.
cant help ya on the motor but ebay has the efi upper/lower for a 5.8 cheap. even has injectors and fuel rail on it which would get you closer and not so dependent on a 100% complete motor
