I have had 6 Mastiffs in the past 14 years. I currently have a 3 year old male Mastiff (brindle color) and he is the largest one I've owned at 243 pounds. A Mastiff is normally a big baby, not aggressive but laid back and gentle with kids. Their feelings can be easily hurt just by telling one "bad dog". Being the size they are it takes a special owner that can socialize them properly, a frightened Mastiff can easily drag you around. There is lots of drool, lots of poop, lots of fur, lots of love. They normally are not willing to try to jump into a vehicle, so be ready to lift them in. The vet office normally has problems fitting one on an operating table, so be prepared to hold the dog's 50 pound head during any surgical procedures.
I had a bull mastiff run out of a yard and hit my truck in the right rear tire while I was going about 35 mph, it literally shook my truck when it hit. The dog took a roll in to the ditch and there were kids waiting for the school bus watching and I thought they just saw their dog die, but it jumped right up and was fine! They have to be one of the strongest dogs out there.
I would love to have a mastiff.I've watched a bit of a special on them. They say their good dogs.Their my second favorite breed, the doberman comes first.
A Bullmastiff was originally a cross of an English Bulldog and an English Mastiff. They are a more active and athletic dog than a Mastiff, even more stubborn too. A Bullmastiff was used to help the King's Gamekeepers capture poachers of the King's deer.
I love giant breeds, such as mastiffs, great danes, and irish wolfhounds. Regrettably, they are rather short-lived; 8-10 years, as a rule. If you get one, be sure to ask the breeder for specific feeding instructions, as they are suseptible to bloat. I know people who feed great danes with their food somewhat elevated to prevent this.
