Old Deer Meat

A friend of mine has about 20 lbs of frozen deer meat (mostly jerky quality) wraped in several packages back from 1996. He was asking if I wanted to cook it up for my dog. My dog is old and finnaky and won't eat anything cheaper than canned dog food, so it is worth a few bucks for me if I can make several meals out of it for him and mix it with some dry food. But I heard somewhere that you should not feed dogs wild game; not sure what the reason was. Also, is meat that has been frozen for almost 8 years too long, even for a dog?

animals can handel some pretty bad stuff, I've fed my dog some ELK liver that I've had go bad before I could eat it. I also save the meat and bones from my deer and elk that you realy can't eat, like the clotted stuff from the etrance and exit wounds, for years and feed it to my pets. As for would I eat the meat you can get, not if it's more than 1 1/2 years old.

We're just now starting to eat meat from the 1999 deer season. It tastes fine. I would say as long as it hasn't been freezer burnt, it should be fine.

there are 10 people in my family 8 kids and my wife and I, meat never stays in the freezer that long, so I don't know if meat that old is bad or not. I always remember as a kid when we raised our own meat I was taught that meat much more than a year old was bad

I'm sure there is one, but I wouldn't tell her, she would be quickly addicted to it and you would never see her seperated from the computer... you'd never get fed, and the floors never scrubbed... think of the terror man... I hope you know I'm joking...

How is the meat packaged? if its in freezer paper, it should be fine, but if its in ziploc bags, chuck it, the plastic breathes, and no matter how much air you got out, its freezer burned...

In Montana if you purposely leave it in the freezer and it gets freezer burned, its called wanton waste, and you can have your tags taken away for two years upon completion of a hunter safety class..
