Just plain old high temp bearng grease. I use a needle tip on the grease gun and just keep going until it's full.

Dunno if it helps or not but it keeps them quiet.

I keep intending to pull my old bad one apart and see just how nonservicable they really are, but I snapped the jaw off my vise a while back and haven't got around to replacing it yet.
Good idea!!! I didn't know that they were accessable. This is my next project.
BTW how do you break a vise jaw??? Kind of like breaking an anvil in half if you ask me. LOL.

Normally I would agree. Unfortunately this little 4" job was a gift a few years back, and evidently was not of the highest quality. Snapped the sliding jaw off right above the worm screw.

Cookie,

1. Would you be VERY specific about the bearing grease you're using? If you've been doing this for some time, and haven't had a failure, you've very likely used one that IS compatable with the OEM stuff. That was my biggest concern about not doing this myself, as mixing thickener types will reduce the lubricity severely, and cause premature failure.

2. What is the indicator that you've "pumped enough"?

3. Does the hub assembly subsequently "throw" any, and if so, is it a braking concern or just a nuisance?

Coastal uniplex high temp grease. Part #52113. It's the elcheapo stuff at Autozone in the black and gold tube, lithium complex grease. Never thought about any compatibility issues, nor have I had any. I just figured grease is grease. I haven't been doing it all that long. 50K miles or so. Started doing it after I had a bearing failure. The new one looked kinda dry, so I filled it up.

I pump it full, i.e., when the grease comes out the ABS sensor hole in the top of the hub housing where I'm putting it in.

It hasn't "thrown" any that I can discern, but it does "ooze" past the inner bearing seal a tiny bit and cake up a around the spindle. No issues at all with the brakes. That is actually the only indication I have that the grease is actualy making it into the bearings. Still can't say conclusively that it is.
