Anyone using the Optima or NAPA Orbit battery? my new alternator ate by battery. Why couldn't they just get a long? I've heard they don't like to be overcharged.
I use Optima's in all of my vehicles. People complain because they are on the pricey side, but the old saying stands true.. "you get what you pay for". I have never had a dead Optima (had one in my Landcruiser for 7 years now) and they will crank for days. Well, not literally, but you get what I'm saying.
I had an Optima in a truck once. One day I filled up at a gas station and it started fine. Drove a mile to a store, it would not re-start. Even the radio wouldn't play right. Got a jump and picked up a new battery. I never saw a battery go totally dead without any warning like that one.
Optimas are the only battery to last more than 2 years in my F-600. Even Die hards didnt last. I just replaced the optima in it with another, after 10 years of faithful service. Your right, they dont like to be over charged. Since fords alt gauges SUCK, I suggest installing an aftermarket volt meter. Anything over 16 volts is something that needs to be addressed. I installed one in my truck, and noticed it was charging at 18 volts with the original voltage regulator. New solid state regulator, and 14.8 volts constant all day now.
Thanks for the replys. I had just installed a 140a alternator when the battery sulfated. It is (was) a NAPA NASCAR. I think it got used to running at 13.5 volts. It sits at 14.5v now. I'm leaning toward the Optima.
