Web page design
I know there are plenty of Web page hosts with web design..Has anyone used yahoo's web page buildiers?
They have options from basic to business web pages.
What software for web design is recommended but failrly simple to learn?
Sorry if this has been asked before...
Thanks for any tips, suggestions, experiences..
HT
I'm learning html now, many people recommend using html. I might stay with Yahoo, or not, if I ever get my page finished.
Here's a link you can use to learn html, it's a free site:
http://www.w3schools.com/html/
I'll post a link to my (fairly lame) Yahoo page if you want to see it.
For truly useful web-design software I recommend looking over the used software available through Amazon (NO! I'm not a shill for Amazon, I just know where a good deal can be found).
If you can get them used, Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks are well worth the money. Older versions are for sale cheaply, and have far more options than you will know how to use for a long time to come.
I also recommend doing a search for online HTML tutor sites, because even if you DON'T want to learn to write your pages line by line, it is extremely helpful to be able to spot things in your webpage code that can be corrected or modified quickly. That way you know what the heck is going on...
A web page can be best described as a word document on steroids...
It sounds daunting, but is really sort of simple. You have to tell other peoples web browsers what to display, and how to show them those displays. A web page is made out of several different pieces:
Text
Graphics (pictures)
and hyperlinks
I could spend all night and not cover all of the basics here.
The simple school of thought is to make a word document that has everything you want on your page, and then SAVE AS an HTML document type.
WORD will do that....
It beats the dickens out of trying to get Front Page Express to do anything helpful...
One more note (and this is cheating!):
You can build a page at geocities/yahoo, and then view it. When you do, click on the toolbar to view the source coding, and save it as a text document ot an html.
When you look at it on your own computer you can slice out any geocities or yahoo content - and then post it up on TRIPOD or wherever you want!!!
In other words - you can use the geocities/yahoo editor to build a page to transport to anywhere you like... As long as it saves as a plain old HTML file.
Uploading all the dependant files (graphics and stuff) is up to you. You may have to rename files...
Right now I want you to do something very simple
Click on the View item on your toolbar, then click on the Source item in the drop down menu. This will give you a look at what coding looks like.
This is what you need to get familiar with. Over time, it becomes easy...

Vb uses the bracket keys, and HTML uses the greater than and less than symbols.
HTML is much more capable, and is disabled on most message forums including this one. There is good reason for that - HACKERS take advantage of HTML in some forums.
Vb (Virtual Basic) was developed, I believe, to prevent maliscious intrusions on polite websites. In the early days of online forums it was not unusual to be hacked by people for no better reason than that they saw you as competition with someone they wanted to know.... Children getting rid of rivals.
At a thousand bucks a pop at times, computers have always cost pretty much the same. Burn someones hard drive, and the place is yours...
THIS IS WHY "The Globe" folded. They were hacker ridden, and did nothing about it. Moderated sites became the way of the future, and the best of them were the heroes of the internet.
THIS IS ONE.
FTE has rules...
