In my state usually by mid - october, the trees are in full fall color and shedding their leaves fast. By Halloween, people have these big yellow garbage bags with scary faces on them full of leaves waiting to be picked up by the sanitation dept. Our yards are usually full of leaves with the trick or treaters crunching thru them. It is Oct 16, and our tree leaves have not even changed colors yet. ...
I wonder if that is a result of such a long, hot , dry summer we had here ( near drought alert and and still having one ) , or is this a sign of a really bad winter coming to us ? Anyone have a Farmers Almanac and can see what kind of winter my region is forecast for ??
my almanac stops after october '05, but for the month of october: 56*, precipitation 2''. 1-8 showers, then sunny, warm. 9-13 showers seasonable. 14-20 showers, chilly. 21-26 rain, then sunny, seasonable. 27-31 rain, then flurries.
take it for whats its worth. its only been sorta right for texas. said we'd have above average rainfall for august...well, we didn't really have any at all..... its still around high 80's here this past week. high 60's at ngiht....its been a wierd fall so far indeed...
i dont know about your area but we in iowa are expecting a hard winter. the farmers almanac for here says that anyway. We are having the same drought as you, river levels on the mississippi are so low that all of the submerged wing dams are exposed. It was 88º here friday, great riding weather but still kinda warm for the middle of october. i would suggest stocking up on melting salt and getting a new snow shovel. I went one step further and put new rails on the snowmobiles, i am ready
Its a late fall here. The trees are just beginning to change & the temps are still high. Its been real dry this yr & like the above post states the Miss river is real low. We ride in the basin on our quads & its a 1/4 mile to the water from the banks at some places. I hope we have a short winter since fuel prices are to be so high.
This past week on the news they were saying that for the west and midwest its supposed to be a warmer than normal winter.
The only bad thing about that is that warmer winters typically bring heavy snows (warmer air has more moisture than cold air).
Im not sure how much stock Id put in either though. In the end, all they are doing is venturing an educated guess.
Octane
Fall is here. But like you guys, I think the leaves are a tad slow in falling, but I have been wrong before. I don't know about the almanac, but I think we may finally have a decent winter after the last 6 years of drought. I hope so anyway. Getting the snow blower cleaned up already, splitting a cord of wood this week and finishing up the bush trimming and leaf raking somewhere in between...ahhh, I love vacations.
here in northern nevada the leaves have been falling for two weeks. I had to break the ice off of the dogs watter last week and have had to scrape my windows several times. oh and last weekend we had snow on some of the surrounding hills
