I am having a problem with my tail lights not working on my truck. the truck is a 79 F250 4x4 with a flat bed and the lights and wiring from the bed are from a 76 F350 2wd. the lights are ford factory lights. My head lights work, blinkers front and rear work and when i step on the brakes my tail lights work, but when i turn the head lights on the tail lights don't light up like they should. I have tried to see what is causing thing but with no luck. If anyone can tell me what wires do what or what the problem my be it would be a huge help.
I don't have a wiring diagram for a 79, but the 1980 taillight wire is brown. Whatever it is, get a meter and see if you have 12 volts back there with the lights on. We can assume you do not have a ground problem since the brake/turn lamps work OK. This wire should also go to your license plate light.
There is a really good article in tech section for tail lights and what the wires do. I used it on my 1975 F-250 Crewcab 4x4 and it worked great!!!!!!!!!!!!
Check your taillight sockets and your bulbs the brake light bulbs are double filament it's possible the light side of the bulbs are blown. just a thought seen stranger things happen
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-May-02 AT 12:38 PM (EST)]my lights were all screwy, so I cleaned all of the sockets and any connectors I could find and then replaced most of the bulbs, now all of the lights work even when the lights are on and I am stepping on the brakes.
So first thing is to clean and replace bulbs.:7
also, there is a connector under the tailgate for the rear wiring harness, this gets pretty dirty being so close to the road, so it might be worth it to clean the connections on that as well.
