I am putting a fresh 1982-3 300 six in my 1973 in place of my 240. The 240/300 in the '73-'79 has 6 degree btdc timing, the 1982 has 10 degree btdc timing(stock). Does the 1982 have a different cam or is timing increased simply because it comes stock with electronic ignition? The reason why I'm asking is the distributor in my 1973 is still in good shape and if possible I would like to re-use it in the 1982 as I have become an expert at changing the points so that ain't a big deal.
I think the best way to answer that is, if you wanna run the points distributor, do so, play around with the timing until you find a happy medium. Increasing the timing over stock recommended settings, is one of the first modifications many do, put a little extra pep in your step, so to speak.
IMO, keep the electronic distributor, more spark output and you'll never change or set the points again.
