so I have a 99 f-250. When I first got it we really didnt use it a ton, but In the past 2 years I have started using it as my primary. Over the last year I have noticed that it has gotten louder, but have had no performance problems. today I was talking to my neighbor about it as he has the same year model f350 and mine is twice as loud as his. I decided to finally get my butt on the ground to take a look at it and realized that the noise is coming from underneath. I got out the stethascope (sp?) and listened and the noise is coming from inside the bell housing for sure. I took the cover off that covers the fly wheel and couldnt see anything broken (ie no teeth or bolts rattling around). however there is still a very distinctive rattle right there at the torque converter.
I can isolate the area where the rattle is but really have no idea what it could be. Is there anything metalic inside of the torque converter that could break off inside it?
There's lots of neat things in a torque converter that can break apart. I will make no attempt to tell you what they are as I have only cut one open to see what it looked like. IT LOOKED CONFUSING. Of course it was from a CAT 3208 and was rebuildable. It's a fluid coupler, so something can give.

Some flywheels have been known to crack causing a knocking sound. May be hard to see.
My 99 lasted only 20,000 miles and it got noisey like you yours.. Lucky me, it was still under warranty... the torque converter was bad... runs alot quieter now..
Take the truck to possibly a cottmans tranny shop or someone you trust. They might as well do a service and check her out. Better safe then sorry, I know cause mine blew up.
thanks for the responses. Im pretty sure that it is the tc. I should be able to get access to a lift. Anyone know how bad of a job its going to be to replace it?
Best thing to do with a 99................trade it. I traded my problem plagued 99 for an 02 7.3 and it has been the best move I made in my life. Srry if i pissed off the 99 owners.
I do not feel the '99 is problematic, but mine did have the torque converter come apart at 95,900 and it took out the rest of the tranny when it did. So it would be a real good idea to get right on it.
