Hi, I have a 1996 f250 4x4 with a 351 and an e40d. The mpg were getting worse and the code for torque converter slippage came up and every once in a while i could hear a rattling noise in gear. I took it to aamco. They said it was rebuild time. The total rebuild cost with torque converter, $250.00 in small upgrades, and a 460.00 3 year warrenty was $3,005.00. I couldnt afford it so i put it on the credit card. That was about 3 weaks ago. The first two weaks on cold mornings it wouldnt shift out of first until warm. Once it wouldnt go into reverse. They couldnt get it do do it at the shop of course but said it could be a stuck valve. They put an additive in it and that seemed to get rid of that problem. SHOULD A VALVE BE STUCK right after an expensive complete rebuild? Next problem since the day after i brought the truck home from aamco its been making a rattling noise in gear that is getting louder and louder. When i shift into neutral it completely goes away, when in gear it comes right back. Its loudest when driving for a while and i stop in drive, like at a light. Sounds like shaking a soda can with rocks in it. At times almost sounds like a diesel. Ammco said they couldnt hear anything and from what i described it was probably not the t.c. but maybe an engine miss. I cant afford to take it to a shop right now, and i dont trust aamcos word. I paid alot for the warrenty. Anyone that has any ideas please let me know what you think. Thanks
could have a heat sheild the is makeing the noise.set the emergency brake and have someone sit in the vehicle and have them hold the brake pedal while the vehicle is in gear.you might be able to pinpoint the noise.
Thats an idea, i'll check the heat sheild. As far as waisting my 3,000. I know that already thanks, but thats not really what im asking for an opinion about. Im asking if it sounds like it could be something besides the tranny. Also im asking if it makes sense that a valve could be stuck right after a complete rebuild.
Anything is possible, but what you have to do is keep taking it back to AAMCO. You paid for a rebuild with a warranty, you should get it. They will hope that you just go away, but don't give up. It's not you job to troubleshoot problems after a rebuild, that's their job. Be courteous, but very firm. Make them keep their part of the bargain. AAMCO's reputation is a moot point right now. You just need to see this through.
warwagon is right.they have to stand behind there product.no matter how poor there product and reputation is.there is someone futher up the ladder at any buisness.
I used to own an Aamco Center. There are more good ones than bad ones but any of them can have a problem. Yes, its not uncomon to have a stuck valve after a rebuild. If it freed up you should be fine.
The rattle in gear is surely the flywheel bolts hitting the dust shield. Ask them to check that. Its a common problem after an install.
If you mileage is down, get them to show you how to tell if the torque converter clutch is engaging. Most likely the problem is the torque converter clutch isn't locking up.
Thanks alot for the great advise everyone. I'll take it back asap and have them recheck it. Thanks Clubwagon now I know what to get checked out, and its great to get some feedback from a previous aamco owner. Very happy to hear they were telling me the truth about the valve sticking.
one other thing to do is call the credit card and dispute the charge
when the c.c. company refuses to pay they will get a differant
attitude about fixing the trans
