I've got a 76 F150 with a 460 cid eng, and a 435 NP 4 spd trans. I'd like to slap in a C-6 auto trans, but am not sure what will fit in my application. Can I just take any C-6 and mate it to my NP 205 transfer case? Or do I need a C-6 that was specifically designed for a 4x4? My 4spd and Transer Case are married. Any help would be great, thanks in advance!!
the C6 for a mated unit is specific. it has a special output shaft and tailshaft housing. there are two different kinds so you want to find one for your transfer case. where are you located? i am just south of san jose Ca and would swap for 4 speed stuff. hawkrod
Yes the c6 needs to be from a 4x4 or the tranny will have to come apart to change output shaft. I have the c6 setup you need was in a 78 f150 4x4 and i would swap it for your 4speed setup also. Im located in Pa. you could email me if you like.
What condition is your automatic stuff in? All my 4spd equipment is newly rebuilt. Hayes Flywheel with option of either 11" or 12" clutch, it has an 11" Hayes clutch and pressure plate installed. Trans has about 400 miles or so on its rebuild. I would only be interested in swapping for newly rebuilt stuff. I'm located in Ogden Utah.
My stuff is just used that I bought with my 460 from a f150 engine swap. Wouldnt be a fare deal plus UTAH far anyway. But I beleive you could just use a c6 from a 150,250,350 or bronco that had a 351/400m with a 460 flexplate. You will need the adaptor between trans and transfer case also since a 4x4 trans has a longer output shaft.
Thanks for taking the time to reply and good luck Andy
Hi, I did this switch about 1 1/2 years ago and it has worked out very well. Mine was in a 1978 F150 4x4 short bed. I found out a couple of things while I was researching the change over. You will need a C-6 that fits a 351m 400 or a 460. The C-6's come with two different lengths of tail shafts. The adapter between the tranny and transfer case also comes in two different sizes. I was able to find a parts truck that was complete and so I had every thing that I needed. That obviously is the best way to go. If you cannot find a parts truck then measure the overall length of your tranny and adapter and look for that setup. The only other thing I can caution you on is the adapter, some will work on either the 203 or 205 and others work on one or the other. On my 78 the adapter from my 4 speed bolted right to the C-6 and to my 205.
I am in Centerville Utah. You can email me at hansentw(No Email Addresses In Posts!) I will give you my phone # and you can call if you have any Questions.
