Loud ping at idle

My 99' F250 developed a loud ping at idle. Sounds like someone hitting it with a hammer. When motor is sped up over 1200 RPM, it quiets down. Had a diesel mechanic tell me he thought it was the injector pump flooding a cylinder with fuel. Anyone have this problem? Anything else it could be?

have you changed/checked your oil lately? i have heard here on the boards that when the additive packages wear out, that the engine will ping and "knock" (typical of diesels) louder than normal. just a thought.

Does it normally sound like a rod knocking?

Yes, in bad cases you'll think the block will break, it's that loud. You have a simple case of injector knock. Mostly it sounds like a ball peen hammer tapping on the side of the block. More noticable inside the cab than outside. Just about all the 99-03 PSD's do that from what I have been able to learn here on FTE. Some are worse than others.
There's lots of things that you can do to help clear it up. Doing the Hutch mod on the fuel pickup, eliminating all of the quick connects from the fuel tank to the fuel pump inlet will eliminate any introduction of air into the fuel supply. That will help, but not eliminate the problem. Most people just live with it, but if yours is pretty loud than you do need to look into a new injector.

I found the Hutch mod on Webshots. Is there a complete step by step document somewhere to download?

Not really, he assumes that you kind of know what you are doing inside the tank.

My problem seems to have been fuel. I dumped quiet a bit of diesel injector cleaner into the tank and ran it for a couple of days. It is as quiet as a diesel now. I must of had some bad fuel or a dirty injector. I am still going to do the Hutch mod. It makes sense to remove any possible areas for air, especially after the problems I just went through thinking my engine was about to blow.

ggirten also eliminate all the factory quick connects at all the flex hose junctions. Those connections are great at keeping fuel in, but terrible at keeping air out. For some reason the o-rings that seal them simply cannot keep the seal when there is a slight vacuum like pulling fuel toward the pump. Simply cut off the flex part and reattach with new flex hose and screw clamps. Use the expensive fuel injection rated hose so you don't have to worry about hose rot. That will pretty much eliminate all chances of introducing air into the fuel.
