Hunting season is upon us, and while I had hoped to have my 73 ready to drag our 15 foot 1963 "aristocrat" trailer up there, (lemme tell ya, its not very "aristocratic" by todays standards )its not gonna happen....my truck wont be ready
That said, Im gonna have to use my wifes truck, 82, F150, 302, C6.
Im not worried about the motor persay, Im worried about the Ridiculous 3.00:1 axle ratio bogging/lugging it, and really worried about getting the transmission hot (what the heck was ford thinking with this rear end?)
Its mostly a flat haul, and Im not in a big hurry, think the ole 82 will get me through until my 73 is ready? Think the tranny will stay cool enough with the stock cooling?
Im not even sure what this trailer weighs, 3,000 lbs maybe? any guesses?
There are three options to improve your situation.
Swap out the axle center section for a 3.50 or 3.25 Ratio. $150
Add a tranny cooler in front of the radiator $50
Add a trans temperature gauge. $50
As a side note, I installed a SW trans gauge on my C6 yesterday. There is a fitting on the drivers side of the trans, right infront of the shift linkage. When removed, it is actually a 1/8" NPT 27 plug. The SW sender screws directly into there and has a single wire connected to the gauge.
yeah that 302 shouldn't bog down too much. what's the final drive ratio out of the tranny? Without overdrive that 3.00:1 ratio might not be so bad after all. I'm towing a 2500 pounder with my 77, got a 3 speed manual and 2.73 gears, 300I6. The truck dosen't care about the weight and I never downshift.
If it is a C6 and not a C4, dont worry, bulletproof. 3000 lbs is not that much of a load anyway. If you feel the 302 bogging down, just manually downshift. They put those gear ratios in there because there is no overdrive gear. My mom's Dodge B-250 van has a 2.94 with the 318-2bbl and 727 Torqueflite. A little slow off the line, but otherwise no problem, and it is a high-top conversion van.

The final drive ratio fo a C6 in third gear is 1:1 so if you guys say its okay, maybe Ill just slap a tranny cooler on there for giggles and go for it.. It isnt that far of a trip, and only one smallish hill...
I had previously debated the swapping out the third member idea like suggested, but then if I need 4WD while Im up there it wont be good..... Its gonna get 4.11s someday anyway
Icicle, The 302 aint considered much in the towing lanes, but should make the trip ok. As posted 3000 lbs aint much of a strain. You probably can get by without the cooler, but adding it will help keep it cooler. Heat is what kills en anyways.
3.00 rears are fine, if you have a big ol horse up front to properly lead it around.
the 3.00 was used in trucks with a auto do to the fuel economy and with a auto you get the torque multiplication factor. my 75 with c-6 3.00 open diff rated at 6,500lbs stock.
I personally have towed a 77 f150 with 400 engine on a 1000lb flat bed using a 91 f150 with 302, aod, and 3.0 diff. It was a 35 mile trip and it didn't like going over 50, so I didn't, but considering the 5500 lb weight and frontal area I think you have no worries. Just listen to your truck. They usually will let you know.
