I always thought New Process was Chrysler, and was surprised and dissappointed when I saw the SD trucks using what I always had considered a inferior transfer case compared to the Borg Warner unit used in the previous trucks.
Personally,I had problems with a prior truck with the NP unit , but never in multiple trucks with the BW one.
Do I have any of this right and can someone out there that knows (Fred?) shed some light on this as to why Ford would switch from the BW unit ( whats its current availability? ) and what the bottom line is on these two units ?
Current trucks : 96 F350 ,01 F350
NP makes some of the strongest drivetrain stuff around. The NP435 tranny and NP205 transfer case are legendary. The BW stuff is just as good if you ask me.
Neither one of those companies is owned by any of the big three, as far as I know.
Np is owned by Spicer so you know your getting a good peice of drivetrain. As stated the NP435/NP205 combo are legendary, but they do have there corks. I twisted an output shaft on my Np435 last month 4x4ing. It all comes down to what you prefer, i know NewProcess is good so i only buy that name.
I posted NP435 ratio ?, reply was link to Novak web site, they had truck tranny info. Novak said NP435 would burn out 3rd gear parts if towed with rear wheels on ground. So when towing NP435, use dolly under rear wheels, disconect driveshaft, or tow backwards with rear end lifted - front wheels on ground.
I believe the transfer cases in the SD's are either the NP 7100 or the 7300. Depending on if you want the electronic version or the manual version.
I don't remember where I seen it but some website or magazine ripped them apart and did some testing. Their conclusion was that they are two of the toughest transfer cases ever to fall into a truck. They're exact comments were,"if you think magnesium cases and chain driven designs are weak, Sorry, these two cases prove you wrong."
These T/C are built very similar in design, NP has always been a cousin of GM and were built for chrysler also, Chrysler even built the castings for the NP cases. BWA is the leader in TTS today and are winning more contracts every day, Bw builds approx. 75% of all ford T/C. and a good many of GM, Escalade,Yukon,Hummer H2,H3, All wheel drive vans, and won the contract for the New Trailblazer, But GM suspended that contract due to low sales.
The NEW Explorer is getting a makeover it will now have 2H,4Auto,4L and this T/C will interchange with the Expedition, There is no shift fork, it will controlled with Pulse width modulation to the clutch, signaled from TPS, and steering sensor.
A lot of new technology to be released but won't be released until the market supports it.
