2000 Ranger WIll not idle, Will start...
My 2000 Ranger 4.0 will start but immediately stalls. Will run if I press accelerator down a bit and does drive. After warmed up might idle sometimes @ 2-300 then kaput... How do I adjust idle? Or is it cleaning all the sensors? 82000 miles. Where are these sensors located? What to use?
Thanks

*Check f-u-e-l pressure KOEO and KOER
**Forget the cleaning sensors thing for now until the above is addressed. Follow the logical course (ie, modern Y2005 diagnosis)
** A little more info might help; is this a hot engine probelm or a cold engine problem. Do you have a CEL showing?

*It used to be fuel filters had a suggested replacement frequency of 60K miles. This is cheap and easy to remove from the list of concerns.
*There IS a way to check FP (more standard diagnostic proceedure in situtions like this). It's checked at the rail with, ideally, a f-uel pressure gauge. You can rent one or in a pinch use a t-ire pressure gauge. The port on the rail uses a common schrader valve. Yeah, it'll probably ruin the cheapo t-ire gauge so buy a cheapie and use it to get a gut feel for what's going on. To say there is no way to check the f--uel pressure is neglecting one important item that must be checked in your diagnostics. This may increase the time to find and solve the problem.

If your devious enough, you could just leave the gas cap loose & it'll turn it on, then they'll scan it LOL.
But from your description of how it's acting, at first glance I'd maybe suspect something like a faulty IAC, throttle position sensor, vacuum leak, or something along those lines.
But some fuel pressure readings & computer code clues shure would be nice.
In any case IMHO, the fuel filter is WAY past due for change & should be done anyway.
In fact where are you, on due scheduled maintenance, past and present for this ride????
If you don't know, why not bring it up to date, it needs to be done anyway.
Things like fuel filter, air filter, PCV & it's hoses, evap canister vacuum lines for cracks, splits, loose fit on connectors & vacuum lines in general, come to mind, as all these can affect the idle too & maybe not set a CEL.
Let us know what you find.
I tried a new filter, no help. then like another "thread" on the forum for "high idle" I cleaned the MAF sensor, the Throttle body, another temp-bulb type looking sensor in the inlet duct and also a solenoid valve on the side of the intake housing, put them all back in and all is normal now....Good 'ol Carbon was the culprit...thanks for your interest and help...
