Basic tranny question

I have an 82 F150, auto trans, 2wd. How do I tell what tranny I have in the truck. It should be stock, so does that mean I should have the C-6?

What engine do you have? I imagine you would only have a C6 if you have a 351 engine. One thing that separates the C6 from the C4 is that the C4 has a removable bell housing where as the C6 bellhousing and gearbox are one solid piece.

One easy way to tell is to look at the tranny pan and count the number of bolts and/or look at the shape of the pan. The c6 has an "s" shape at the rear of the pan, the c4 is square. I think the c6 has 16 bolts, and the c4 11. Can't check on my c6 to be sure of the number of bolts--it's raining out tonight--but someone else will hopefully chime in and correct me.

inside drivers door I.D. tag: bottom line of tag, trans G=C4, W=C5, K=C6. These letters are also stamped on a metal tag or plate on the tranny case or directly on the case itself

Is it a 3 speed or Overdrive model? I would venture to guess you actually have an AOD.
