I raised this before but I recently saw a 79 F-100 with a small chrome bumper and the spacing of the bumper bolt holes looked like they were the same as the 61 to 66. The frame on the earlier model is narrower at the rear than the 73-79. I now think that the brackets will interchange although the bumpers will not. Can anyone let me know the horizontal hole spacing, center to center, of the bumper bolts on the later model F-100s with the small type stock bumper.
If the brackets work I could use some feedback on who was satisfied with an aftermarket chrome rear bumper. I've seen them from about $100 up to Dennis Carpenter's at close to $300. Ol' Black Jack is a far cry from a show truck but I hate to waste a hundred on something of obvious poor quality. As always I appreciate your efforts to answer my questions. I should finish putting is the "hot rod" 302 motor this week end with a little luck and the wife's blessing.
you can use the 66 bumper on the 73-79 truck. I had to put the left bracket on the right side and the right on the left. you will need a few washers for spacers
I have done a physical comparison of the two and the brackets are identical and will interchange between the narrow earlier rear frames, 64-66 and the later model wider frames. The whole units will also interchange by using spacers to make up the difference in frame widths.
i have had good luck with rechroming the original bumpers. i use a shop in johnson city tenn. they always have you mark your bumper. most of the poor quality stuff has been refinished numerous times and are somewhat thin in places. my advice would be to ask around and find some place with a good reputation and spend your dollars with them.
