Bell housing questions

I have a 352 in a 66 with a 3 speed on the tree. I'm looking to swap in a 4 speed granny box, but the bolt pattern isn't the same. How many diffrent bolt patterns are there for FE bell housings?

there is only one fe bolt pattern very unique to the engine. you sure the 4 speed is off a fe? could be a 460

the 4 speed I'm looking at is still bolted to back of a 390, I wont be able to take it's bell housing though. the bolts on it are 4 7/8s center to center on the sides, the bolts on my 3 speed are much further apart, and located more line top and bottom.

You're saying it doesn't match on the tranny side. the 352 and teh 390 are the same at the engine side. In that case you've got to find a 4speed FE housing like the one you can't take..

So your saying the bellhousing the 4 speed is connected to, has a narrow bolt pattern like a 1964 toploader would use?

yeah, the 3 speed's bolts are about 6 inches apart side to side, and 8, maybe 10 inches aboart top to bottom, in a rectangle. the 4 speeds are maybe a foot apart side to side, and 4-7/8s inches apart top to bottom. That bell housing also fits the early style starter, but its the one I can't take.

So what I need to know is if these two are the only styles of FE bell housings, or if there are more? These trucks are scares in junk yards, so I want to know ahead of time if I might be grabbing a similar looking, but wrong bellhousing when and if I do find one.

Ok ill do my best here. The bellhousing you need, has 4 equal spaced bolt patterns.

The early toploader bellhousings had the bottom left bolt offset from the rest.

What your talking about which sounds like it is wider than a normal later bellhousing but closer together top and bottom, sounds like a Muncie.

I have a few FE bellhousings and they all have the later normal pattern. The early toploader style only fits small blocks usually with a 5 bolt. Before that you had the T-10 , but it used the normal boltpattern like a later FE.

If i was you I would measure the bolt patterns on your three-speed. I have a three speed behind a 302 and it has the later style bellhousing.

Now that I think about it, that 4 speed gear box should have eight holes in it, 4 for the ones like your 3 speed, and 4 inside of that for an earlier style. So the bellhousing you got should fit any Ford 4-speed 65 -66 and newer.

Talking Trans

66 Does the 4spd your getting have bolts holding it to the Bell or does it have studs&nuts? Some of the older style 4spds used a pattern like you describe.

On the 4 speed, I assumed they were bolts, but I can only see the threads. the transmission is still on the truck.

So if it is the early style bellhousing, will I be able to use my current clutch linkage and starter?

I've used the newer starters on the older bells. You should be able to use your clutch linkage. Some of the older 4spds used a 1 3/8 in input shaft, also some had no place for a trans mount
