I drive a 2000 International truck at work with a dt466 in it and over 277,000 miles on it.
Every morning after it's fully warmed up from driving on the freeway, I make a 5-10 minute stop (ideling) then head down a long hill. Using engine braking it holds 40 mph in 5th gear (around 2,000 rpm's) for about 2 minutes. Then as the hill levels out I try to accelerate for the next hill (full throttle) and the engine does nothing. It acts just like the key is turned off for about 3-6 seconds letting out a HUGE amount of white smoke. Then it will shutter a little and go back to normal and the smoke will clear up.
I have talked to the "mechanics" at the place we lease our trucks from and they just rev it up in neutral and say "seems fine to me".
How about a clogged air filter drawing excess crankcase fumes into the intake - no that would make black smoke at WOT. Worth a check anyway.
They use the same injector design that the Powerstroke uses, so maybe bad injector o-rings?
low egt's cause white smoke which is kinda associated with engine braking downhill.
But i'm big into the mechanical managed engines. Those electronics scare me.
Try not engine braking and see what it does, i'm betting it is not staying hot enough in the cylinders and causeing the whitesmoke like when a diesel is cranked cold and it puffs white.
Don't take my word though, i no hardly anything about electronic motors.
That makes sense to me this morning it did it again and I noticed that the temp gauge was showing she was pretty cold. Maybe 160*? The mechanic was called today and should be picking it up to look at it anytime now. I'll let you know what happens.
