i have a 1991 f-250 custom four wheel drive with a 5 speed in line six. I want to find a solid front axle for it so i can do my lift and put tires on it. Right now it has the independent suspension up front and in order to lift it i have to buy the center drop hinge or a major camber adjustment and both of them are gunna be expensive. I have a set of 35x12.5x16 tires i wanna put on it but the front will rub the bumper if i dont do a lift. Does anyone know if any of the 1991 f series trucks had a solid front axle or what other axles would work.
The drop brackets aren't that expensive. Are you buying a kit? It's the best way to go, as it covers all the little things you'll run into, like brake lines, shocks, etc.
You can use a Dana 60, or you can use a heavy duty Dana 44 from 78 to 79. The 60 is obviously a much stronger unit than the 44. Keep in mind it may need to be re-geared to match what you currently have in the truck, or both axles need to be re-geared to go with the bigger tires. Going to 35's from stock is a big change, and you will probably want to re-gear. Your truck will be very slow if you don't.
The 78-79 axle isn't a really good choice for swapping because the spring perches on the axle are too narrow (close together). The frames on the later trucks are roughly 4.5 or so inches wider.
