A bad day in the workshop!

I am in the middle of a two week vacation doing the tear down on my 56 F100. It was going pretty well up until the weekend, when I developed Man Flu ( A cold to most women). So I was feeling pretty rough when today I came to take the windshield out before the cab goes off to the shot blaster.

Anyway I was applying pressure from within as directed but I just couldnt get the glass out so I decided to try and get the stainless trim out first. BIG MISTAKE..

After I got the bottom section out I started on the top and got just past the curve of the screen when I heard a lout CRACK! I now have a 56 F100 minus and windshield... and have no idea where i am going to find one in the UK.

My tip for the day, dont try anything that needs patience and a steady hand when you are full of cold, have a bad head and are constantly coughing....

Lee,
What a bummer! Sorry to hear about that.
As I've gotten older I can (sometimes) recognize when I should walk away from a current project (sometimes)
Don't fret, I'm sure you'll be able to track something down

Good luck
Bobby

Thanks Steve,

I will give them a call tomorrow to see what the damage on the wallet is...

Oh well, live and learn. That will make a good story to tell after the build is done. Usually there is a group of guys sitting around at the shows telling old stories of how things went bad during their project. The best ones usually involve blood! Good luck, Jag

Old equation:

Tragedy+time=humor

It might not seem like it now but like Jag said, it will make for a good story someday. I did the same thing about five years ago when I was doing some paint touch up on my F-2. Fortunately, it has all flat glass and I was able to get one made the next day for $75.

My story is not much better.
I've had a replacement Windscreen for a tick now & about 6 months ago I could finally could afford to have it installed.
So as the Installer is attempting to settle it into place & thwapping the glass w/ the palm of his hand around the bend in it, he notices I'm flinching.
He askes "If he's making me nervious" & I stated, "Yes, he was", he states, "Not to worry, he does this all the time", Crack!!!!!
I've a Vertical Line @ the Bend of the Glass from Top to Bottom.
I'm still waiting for the Co. to come up w/ a replacement Windscreen.

Thanks for all the words of sympathy guys. I am sure as many of you have said I will one day look back on the episode with a smile on my face, it just doesnt feel that way right now...

Strangely though, it does make me feel a little better knowing that I am not the only one to have done this and knowing that even the pro's get caught out I can kid myself that maybe it wasnt me anyway and it would have happened who ever took it out.

MT54 is so right.... it may even be a hundred times better.

I had a similar thing happen removing a perfectly fine windshield from my `62 Lincoln Convertible... my only excuse was that I was dull witted... not from a cold but from being hung over. That turned out to be some spensive beer I drank the night before.

Hang in there, cuz it all has a way of balanceing out and you're likely to dodge the bullet next time.

Cheers!

If you don't plan on reusing the rubber seal, the safest thing to do is cut the flange that holds the glass off with a sharp utility knife dipped in soapy water before attempting to remove the glass. There's a 6" crack in the passenger side of the windshield that was there when I bought the truck, fortunately they still make 56 windshields!
